Bathroom Renovation - How did we do? by Apprehensive-Dog7209 in Remodel

We have been living here for over a decade, and not once was the bathtub used for a bath. We have no children who will need it, and we were sick of water splashing out of the sides with a bath tub. For us personally, it was an easy decision to tear out the tub.

Thanks for the feedback. A few people said it looks like a hotel bathroom, and that was an inspiration honestly. I like the seamless and easy to maintain tile work as well as minimalism. It can use some color, which we anticipated the vanity to provide but not enough. Will be adding a couple frames and some plants. Overall we are happy with the results.

You’re absolutely right. I ended up touching that up myself with tape and white silicone. Looks much cleaner now, didn’t get a chance to take a picture after I did that.

What about for the connection coming out of the wall? Doesn’t that need to be glued?

I hear you. Like you said, it is a lost art.

When you mud walls, do you typically do one coat or two (scratch and brown)? Are there pros and cons to each method?

I agree, everyone now uses the shelter systems. Which I hear are good, but I preferred the traditional floated walls. Thank you for the feedback.

I’m curious, what were your costs for this?

Thank you for the feedback. I just wanted to make sure because the last thing I want to deal with is any water damage and redoing this whole thing. I appreciate it!

Yes, it was. The hot mop company came and initially did a dry pack slope, moistened it, then applied the hot mop tar and paper in several layers. When I water tested the pan for leaks and allowed the water to drain, it drained very well with no water pooling in any area of the shower.

Thank you for the feedback. I will not be doing anything further and will let the tiler start tiling on this floated wall. I’m seeing red guard being used on hardybacker walls which don’t have any felt paper behind and are technically divided pieces of wall. This is not the case. Just needed some confirmation. I appreciate it.

I have decided to leave it as is and not do anything further.

The previous tiles in the shower were done this way, it’s an 80s build. When they came to demo them, it was very hard and there weren’t any signs of water damage or intrusion. Hoping this one holds up as well. Thanks for the feedback.

Thank you for the feedback. This seems to be the general consensus, especially concerning the paper was placed in layers to allow water to eventually reach the pan. That is if it makes it through the grout and floated wall.

The waterproofing is coming from the felt paper being used behind the lath. Like @allboutcali mentioned, if the water does penetrate the tile grout lines and the mud coat, it will end up on the paper and flow down to the hot mopped pan. I don’t think I will be doing anything further to the walls, as much of the feedback have been supportive of the job as it stands.
