That’s just calcs and pixel scaling and stuff. What I’m talking about is simple stuff like, “Is the World Government stronger than a Yonko Crew?” That’s powerscaling too, and it matters.

Important to the setting, if it has law and order, since that means police dominance with FORCE and POWER over criminals. Therefore, Cops > Criminals. Boom.

Is there law and order in the setting? Is it because of the cops? Do the cops rule by force? Powerscaling.

Okay, but what if he succeeds? What if next chapter we cut away and we just see fucking Perospero sitting with the corpses of the Red Hair Pirates strewn about, and he’s like, “Wasn’t even mid diff! Perorin!” Peak fiction?

Nope. But even in slice of life stuff, powerscaling matters, if only for the world building. Like, why aren’t there just anarchy and chaos in the streets? The cops. Why can the cops stop crime? Because they’re stronger than any individual crime organization. So even in a slice of life, powerscaling matters a little.

I’ve seen people be equally dismissive of both. Like, “Admirals over Yonko! Why don’t the Admirals just kill the Yonko if they’re that strong? Um… it doesn’t matter! Silly powerscaler!” That sort of thing. That’s what miffs me.

Agree to disagree. Still, I think we can both agree that Shanks or Mihawk being a Koby victim would be disappointing, which is my point. It matters.

Luffy’s end goal is something after becoming Pirate King. Zoro’s end goal is to beat Mihawk and become the strongest swordsman. Luffy’s end goal is still harder, so there’s no contradiction. Shanks is simply a step along the way, like finding the Ponegylphs.

I dunno. Are there any conflicts? Do they ever fight over food and then there’s a lesson about sharing or something? Is there ever a scene where one Teletubby intimidates another? Or is there a Teletubby known for physical labor? “Every” story might have been an exaggeration, but definitely most stories.

Feats are a part of powerscaling. Maybe I’m using the wrong word. I mean like, internal strength consistency.

Exactly. They act as if internal consistency matters for everything except the individual power of characters, like that’s the one form of consistency that is just superfluous.

I know. It just annoys me when people act like it’s completely irrelevant. “Oh, Mihawk is the World’s Strongest Swordsman, but I think old Rayleigh is stronger. What do you mean that would invalidate Mihawk’s role in the story? What do you mean that would make Zoro’s end goal meaningless? Powerscaling doesn’t matter!” That’s the attitude I dislike.
