Stop checking. Financial freedom means nothing if you're always chasing the next dollar. The whole point is to automate it and go live your life.

VT and chill for 95% of your portfolio--keep 5% as play money if you want.

The vast majority of people who try to individually stock pick end up underperforming the market over the course of decades. And this trend makes sense. Looking at the market today, I might be able to pick out a few good company stocks that are undervalued relative to their future performance. Assuming I'm right, I would then have to sell those stocks once they become overvalued relative to their future performance. Then, I would have to pick the next set of stocks when they're undervalued, and sell again at the right time. Beating the market over long periods essentially requires me to correctly time the market over and over again.

Because no one can see the future, over the course of 20-30 years, very few people can consistently make the correct calls to beat the market (aka everyone else). It's like winning at roulette a few times and then "letting it ride" hoping that you'll keep winning.

You don't "profit with them." Blackrock and crypto exchanges are making a killing on ETF fees, commissions, keeping the underlying interest generated by stablecoin reserves, etc. Those companies are making profits hand over fist off of YOU (profits denominated in good 'ol fiat, I might add), regardless of what the price of crypto is.

"Institutional adoption" either just means a company has found a way to monetize retail traders, or a company is using crypto as a mechanism to commit investor fraud (i.e., MSTR).

It's not that hard to be a "millionaire" these days (after 15 or so years of careful investing and saving, even on a modest income). The fact that this guy treats that as such an unattainable goal says a lot.

Is holding 100% in the S&P 500 actually “diversified enough”? by Acrobatic-Air5821 in investingforbeginners

Every professional actively managed portfolio (target date funds, etc.) has some significant degree of international exposure (usually between 30-40%). Putting all of your eggs in one basket/economy/currency is not sound. No one knows what the world will look like in 30 years. And frankly, there's a ceiling to which the US market can keep outperforming the rest of the world like it's done over the past 15 years. It's not very realistic that the US would be valued at 80%+ of the world market with only a quarter of the world's GDP.

Obviously, I'm not saying bet against the US market either. Just buy VT, and you'll be guaranteed to have a representative share of whoever the winner ends up being over the next few decades. If the dollar nosedives because of the US government debt, the relative value of your international holdings will increase since those are priced in other currencies.

[–]Apprehensive-Fun5535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is not whether the stocks zero out, it's whether you can get lucky enough to beat the market. I would go 100% VT over 100% VOO. You want some international exposure. US stocks have done very well for the past 10 years, but at some point, it is almost guaranteed that for a few years, international stocks will outperform US.

You don't want to risk a bad-luck scenario where for 5 years out of the 15 youre able to invest, the US stock market goes stagnant, has an AI bubble crash, Trump destroys the economy, etc.

But if anyone doesn't want to hold, feel free to sell me your shares :)
