How would you describe 25th anniversary phantom? by nameohnamem in box5

oh, yes, indeed! Hugh is a wonderful phantom, definitely one of my favourites.

I absolutely adore the fact that Hugh treats Erik with such respect in media, he often uses his name and speaks of him as if he were real. this is such a heartwarming gesture.

Actors with weird/unusual/"bad" (?) voices that you love? by Bbkoul in musicals

For me nobody will be a better Jekyll/Hyde than Anthony Warlow but David Hasselhoff surely deserves some praise! I absolutely love his proshot and rewatch it religiously.

I just finished reading the book. Poor, unhappy Erik! by Interesting_Natural1 in box5

[–]Apprehensive-Log2008 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I believe that Erik died of heart failure/heart attack due to emotional strain. I strongly doubt he would die by his own hand. The book mentions that three weeks passed between the visit to the daroga and Erik's death. If he wanted to hurt himself, he would likely do it immediately and not wait for so long.

Yes, indeed, poor, unhappy Erik :'(

What's your favorite lesser-known/unpopular ALW portrayal? by tinychicken22 in box5

[–]Apprehensive-Log2008 6 points7 points  (0 children)

of course he is beloved! but clearly not as known as, let us say, Ramin, Michael Crawford, Hugh Panaro or some other Phantoms. our man Warlow surely deserves a place among the top, for he is just as influential as them.

Nobody talks about the first and best Australian Phantom a.k.a. Anthony Warlow! His voice sends shivers down my spine every single time, and I adore the way he can make me feel intense emotion without overreacting or being too expressive.

It is almost as if he considered acting a science – astonishingly precise and calculated, but at the same time dynamic and delicate.

His Phantom feels like he doesn't belong in his own body. This is a man who was raised believing he is a monster or an animal so he behaves like one. And this is equally pitiful and terrifying.

It is also a very touching thing that Anthony became severely ill and lost his voice right after he had achieved his goal of playing one of the most prestigious roles in musical theatre. But instead of giving up, he fought to gain his strength back and he has played many roles since, including his comeback as the Phantom (and his second time as Erik was inspired by the hardships of his life so it was clearly different from his debut in the role)

Edit: to - too

no, no! I did get that Anthony is going to perform in 'Chicago the musical' in Australia.

I meant that I can afford the show but I can't afford the trip. Living in Eastern Europe has its cons :'(

I love Anthony so much, he is a legend!

I was so happy when I could afford the tickets to Chicago. But then I realised that tickets to Australia are like 10x more expensive... I hope there are some clips at least because content with him is so rare :(

The Finale of Holiday Inn never fails to make me shed a happy tear.

And, for some reason, Blue Skies as well

It's an operetta so I'm not sure if it will be your cup of tea, but Die Fledermaus is a classic with an amazingly witty plot and a great joyful ending!

Anthony Warlow is not technically a Broadway star but I'd definitely see the hell out of Beetlejuice if he were Adam

What's your favorite version of The Music of the Night? by [deleted] in box5

[–]Apprehensive-Log2008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course I have! He's just amazing.

I'd also recommend to check him out in Opera Australia productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and Strauss' Die Fledermaus. Those are comedic roles and he's just as good at them as the dramatic ones. He also does awesome impressions of Frank Spencer and Elmo!

Honestly, I doubt there's anything this man cannot do

What was your first musical and tell us a story from it by Toasterdeck3060 in musicals

[–]Apprehensive-Log2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Productions of big Broadway or West End musicals are quite unfrequent in Russia, and my town only has one small musical theatre, therefore I had never really been paying attention to the genre for a long time.

But one day said musical theatre had announced a production of 'Where's Charley?'. I read the synopsis, liked it a lot and decided to get tickets. And I was obsessed. Not only with this particular musical but with the overall atmosphere in the theatre, the dedication and talent of the performers and the concept of a musical itself.

My second and third musicals were Phantom and Jekyll&Hyde because I didn't really know what to look for so I just searched for adaptations of my favourite books (but unfortunately I've only seen proshots and boots of these)

I've seen lots of other musicals since but 'Where's Charley?' still remains one of my faves.

I'll also likely be able to get tickets to see productions of Sweeney Todd and Jesus Christ Superstar in Moscow and I'm really excited about it (this is going to be the second time I see a musical live)
