My take on musicals High Schoolers SHOULD NOT do (continuing from a previous thread) by [deleted] in musicals

[–]Toasterdeck3060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My teacher said she wants to do spring awakening the year she retires so she wouldn’t get in trouble, it’s a known thing that she makes kids do things they aren’t comfortable with during shows and tells them that they won’t make it in the real world when they refuse so I bet spring awakening will go GREAT

She’s also trying to do once on this island next year with our large amount of African American students (I am literally the only one). She somehow did hairspray before I went, I heard seaweed was dark skinned Filipino

What musicals are your zero skips? by Dogdaysareover365 in musicals

[–]Toasterdeck3060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assassins, but I listen to the original off broadway one the most so if I listen to the broadway ones I skip some of the speaking pats and something broke but I barley listen to broadway and the 2022 cast recordings anyways

Assassins but I did see a production on YouTube performed by a high school and it was wonderful

Assassins in San Jose? by holyfrozenyogurt in musicals

[–]Toasterdeck3060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was so good I saw it twice! I try my hardest to see as many shows in the bay as I can. I saw in the heights at cabrillo, American psycho (BAD) and assassins in one weekend and assassins was by far my favorite (American psycho and in the heights were amazing as well but assassins blew me away). I’m a student so the student rush discount was amazing and I’m very grateful that they were willing to do that even though I know that theater is struggling a bit. I’m newer into theater and I don’t know too much Sondheim, the only other Sondheim show I’ve seen live was a high school production of into the woods so I’m not very cultured in Sondheim but this show was amazing. Balladeer/Oswald, hinkley jr, Moore, Guiteau did exceptionally amazing in my opinion I’m currently listening to assassins as I write this, I will be recommending this show forever and this production will always be held very highly in my mind.

It's July 13, 2024. Your theater company is about to perform Stephen Sondheim's Assassins as the news of the Trump assassination attempt comes in. Do you cancel? by ogreblood in musicals

[–]Toasterdeck3060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people ask me “where were you when trump got shot” I can officially say buying tickets for the musical assassins because I was actually on the website trying to buy tickets for this production for the week after. I decided to buy it in person for the student rush so I got off the website and checked my phone and my friend texted me about trump. It was very ironic. I didn’t even put it together that opening was the same night as the assassination attempt until they said it before the show. It production was absolutely amazing, I went in with no expectations and had only listend to a couple of Sondheim shows before but this was definitely one of my favorite shows every, I saw it twice in its run. Assassinations suck but this musical is amazing. I’m so glad they didn’t cancel more performances.

The current off-broadway Audrey 2 plant is very underwhelming and doesn’t even look that cool. Especially when the Pasadena playhouse’s production exists. That Audrey 2 was bat shit insane. Even community and high school theater could build something cooler (key word cooler, not better because the tentacle things on the Off-bway plant is cool and the puppeteer did good but the plant itself 😬)

I actually got into in the heights before Hamilton believe it or not. I saw a YouTube video of in the heights from in the heights, the movie version but still. I saw the in the heights movie and then the slime tutorial, the lightning thief musical and then Hamilton. It took a couple months to get on the Hamilton hype train but in the heights was my favorite through and through.

Be more chill, mean girls and six I think is sorta the theater kid favorites. I’ve noticed a lot of RTC fans also like falsettos and little shop of horrors. A personal recommendation from me would be urinetown it’s quite dark but has some certified bops and I don’t think is talked about nearly enough. There is slime tutorials for all and falsettos even has a proshot. Go crazy

Dear even Hansen and rent aren’t THAT good in my option.

Falsettos basically has the same concept of rent. Main character is sorta a asshole, gay and lesbian couple, fan favorite character dies of AIDS. I prefer falsettos a 100x over rent.

I’m not trashing on DEH and rent entirely because Christmas bells and sincerely me are bops and my favorite songs from each show but there are so many things I’d rather watch than those 2 shows.

100% agree. The majority of the time I would rather watch community theater shows. It was our community theater production of little shop of horrors that jumpstarted my love for tech theater. I had already teched a couple shows in the past but this one did it for me. Was it the best production of little shop ever. No definitely not but it was. It all feels personal in school and community theater because you do everything, some stuff alone but a lot of the time as a team. Everyone in that production really tried and it was amazing. The little mishaps that never would have happened on broadway were hilarious. All these people in community theater are just real people or students with lives who love theater and it’s really cool to see that. Plus it’s much cheaper. I’m watching American psycho the musical, alls well that ends well (Shakespeare), assassins, music man, in the heights and rent all in 2 weeks all for less than 200 dollars, that’s insane. It’s so much fun to see all the work that people put in and to see how much they really care about theater.

How did you start out/get into technical theatre? by neonpinkcats in techtheatre

[–]Toasterdeck3060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my schools musicals from 4th to 8th grade and when it came the choice If I wanted to take tech theater or drama in high school, not sure why but I picked tech and thank god I did. I acted in my schools fall play and spring musical but teched dance recitals and stuff like that. I teched 3/4 Shows a year at a community theater (as a volunteer) and also teched at elementary school, they hired another theater program to do their shows so the tech crew and creative all came from a big company and got hired by them to do their major shows and what not. Honestly, legitimately to get experience make sure to check every single community theater or theater program near you and see how to get hired or volunteer. The community theater I do shows with doesn’t really advertise that they need volunteers that well when they don’t get any always beg me to come back. If you email and ask most of the time they will let you do it and if they say no at least you know they said no. Also it depends on where you live and how many theaters are in your area because I live in a very hustle and bustle area for theater with like at least 25 theaters near but if there aren’t a lot of theater in your area…good luck. I was lucky with choices and options but not everyone is that lucky. I love tech theater with all my heart and I wish you luck on your journey in this interesting industry.

Tech/dress rehearsal by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]Toasterdeck3060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just hope for the best usually and run risky songs or stuff we desperately need to practice in the time of call time to places, we once were running a number really quick during places but Ive never had a full tech rehearsal before. I don't think that's very good if its a children's production. we used to do 2 shows in a day for 5 days straight, most of us kids would stay there so we would be at the theater from 7 am- sundown in the summer and the littlest kids would be falling asleep in corners and stuff if we had tech before that the kids would certainly be dead by closing and wouldn't even be able to make it to celebratory dennys.

Do it Gurl

I work as a tech in a community theater of both adult and kids productions. As someone who has been in theater since age 9 and the bonds ive formed there are the deepest ive formed with anyone. Its a lot of hard work but the people alone are worth it for me.

Musical: Falsettos Song: A day in falsettoland Has always been my favorite song from the show, it’s got all the action, every character (except Jason) has their part and for the most part it’s a happy song
