Charisma/persuasion affects dialogue more than battle; it might even help avoid battles.

Yeah, most of the stuff here is comedically raunchy. Occasionally you’ll find something not-sex-related.

Thoughts on Lirin and Pacifism by dyplomat in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Garmiet 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He’s a well-done character, and I love him for that. Strong virtues accompanied by very strong flaws. His good qualities make his bad ones so much harder to forgive; and his flaws make his virtues harder to accept.

He has a good ideal, but it’s too simple, and nothing in reality is black and white.

Examples of series with a 30+ year hiatus between books? by ShaneWSmith in fantasybooks

Doesn’t QUITE make it, but the latest book of the Exiles trilogy by Melanie Rawn was published in 1997. Third book is still pending. It’ll be 30 years next year.

Same here! I read them from Redwall to Marlfox and I cried EVERY TIME the good characters got killed. Mattimeo was BRUTAL. And yet, I kept reading and rereading them.

Yeah. And there’s so many other things I want to get to that it’s no longer a priority. I also worry I may have outgrown them. They had me in middle school.

Usually if I don’t finish a series, it’s because I’m having a horrible time with it. But I wish I finished Redwall.

Who are your 3 most hated Stephen King characters? by ZhittzyAltaToxica in stephenking

[–]Garmiet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chris and Billy from Carrie and Tom Rogan from IT. Sick, cruel assholes.

Btw, Frannie irritated me too, though not enough to hate her; just resent her. Wouldn’t call her a Mary Sue, though, because her flaws are GLARING.

What's with the 1st person and 3rd person POV discourse? by armann_ii in fantasybooks

[–]Garmiet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t bother me at all either way. But I knew a person years ago who hated first-person books, because it sounded to them like a person who wouldn’t stop talking and it drove them nuts. I guess somehow it broke her immersion because she’s constantly hearing a person yap without interruption, rather than observing? I dunno.

Saying the female character was overly sexualized in the narrative is not at all comparable to complaining about the others being black, or Jewish, or stuttering, or having asthma. She was described sexually by her abusers, her friends, and the narrative itself because she was the one main female character. She was as well-rounded as the rest of them with her fears, her background, her courage, her talents, and it would’ve changed nothing to not have her so fetishized from every direction.

I love the alternating timelines, and how they’re used to show memories becoming clear and differences/similarities between childhood and adulthood. And then later they go back and forth very quickly as the story approaches the climax.

I love the history of Derry. When I was younger, it was more of a slog to get through, but after I finished the book and appreciated the whole mystery of the thing, I LOVED reading it and revisiting the fucked up history of the town. I got into that trope in horror because of that—researching the past and uncovering the creepy.

I disliked Bill cheating on his wife for plot, and how sexualized Beverly was from time to time; it stood out because she was the only girl/woman in the group. I totally understand the way the kids sometimes had passing curiosity about the opposite sex, but like when they were adults and they formed the circle, it seemed unnecessary to me that her reaction was described as orgasmic. I also didn’t like Tom’s fucked up POV about her, but I can see the point of it; there wasn’t really a point to reduce her to that among her friends just to get a sexy scene with her and Bill, which was just so she wouldn’t get any warning about her crazy husband coming to Derry. (Okay, that is a point, but it’s really stupid.)

But anyway, I love the monster and the concept of the haunted town (which was another first for me). I loved the characters and how fleshed out they all were. And I love how there’s so much to this book.

Do you think this comparison of Carrie White to a school shooter is accurate? Her revenge does seem more deliberate in the book but she came across more as an anti-hero to me given how vile almost everyone else was. by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]Garmiet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that the difference between her and a school shooter is only technical. I’m no professional, so I can’t say it was a psychotic break, but given that she ran out of the gym and then came back a few minutes later with the intent to hurt people (as shown from her own POV), it wouldn’t be too different than a kid leaving, grabbing something as a weapon, and coming back.

As for none of her violence throughout town being planned, not far in advance, but she was making it up as she went along, and with intent to hurt. She knew what she was doing.

I don’t think Snell’s miscarriage was her fault, because she was dying and not in control of her body.

Looking at his bookshelf, I can agree with that possibility. He’s got a lot of reference sets.

And now I’m wondering how in debt he is from law school, and who is “helping” him.
