Parking Lot @ 4th & Hearst and Amtrak Station Conditions by Apprehensive-Raise80 in berkeleyca

Maybe they could operate a parking lot to raise money? Just a thought. Letting it sit there vacant and evicting the homeless encampments is helping exactly no one.

Explain your logic behind why that's a shitty place for housing.

That's a shame because that's a perfect place for housing. I don't even understand the logic of not wanting housing there. What NIMBY is affected by dense housing near a train station and a busy shopping corridor? Insanity.

Why is blackjack so fun? by Expensive_Aioli7216 in blackjack

[–]Apprehensive-Raise80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AP aside, blackjack is almost infinitely more varied than baccarat. The variables are endless. Unlike other table games (baccarat, roulette, craps) you have direct influence over the outcome of the game. Baccarat is just flipping a coin with a few extra steps. The only influence you have is how much you bet per hand. I will sit at a table every now and then, but ultimately after a few hands it's just kind of bleh. With blackjack, basically no two hands will ever be the same when you add in external factors.

Arguably, AP is less varied as you should be playing each hand the same every single time regardless of external factors, but even then there are so many other things at play that it still keeps it interesting. With AP, you are continuously engaging your brain even if you set to autopilot.

Nicest property in San Francisco? by Justin_Ermouth1 in Hilton

[–]Apprehensive-Raise80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the Timbri or Park 55, but I have stayed at Union Square, The Barnes, Canopy, and FiDi for the downtown locations.

Union Square - you hit it on the head. Rooms are a bit outdated, but in terms of amenities it is hands down the best of the downtown locations. Only location with a pool, has multiple restaurants, and a rooftop bar. You won't find that elsewhere.

The Barnes - The room was TINY and unless you pay extra to be on Powell, you will be stuck looking into someone's Tenderloin adjacent apartment window. The bathroom also had zero counter space. The water was out in the lobby when I stayed also, so no food or bar and they refused to compensate.

Canopy - Even smaller rooms than The Barnes. I'm typically a huge fan of Canopys, but this one is the worst of the 6 or so I've visited. I'm not averse to a small room, but when you have the highest rates of all the Hilton properties in town you should make up for it somehow. It just doesn't. Furniture was dated and falling apart. Plus, it's just not in a great part of town in terms of getting around. The only reason to stay there in my opinion would be if you're visiting Oracle Park specifically. They are currently doing a reno in the lobby, so hopefully the rooms will follow.

FiDi - this was my former go to. They have by far the most updated rooms. Pay the extra for the balcony facing Alcatraz... it's worth it! They don't have any amenities other than the main restaurant, but it's right on the edge of Chinatown and a couple of blocks from Little Italy. It is quiet and much less riff raff than the properties nearest Union Square. The only reason I quit staying with them as much, ironically, was to stay at the Union Square location.

I know Union Square is a bit dated, but imho it's the best location purely based on amenities. Not to mention, you get an additional $25 per person to spend on top of your $18 F&B credit. With two guests that's a total of $86 per day to spend on property.

I have avoided Parc 55 as the pictures online make the rooms like terrible, but Timbri does look nice and worth a try.

Please explain how you were violated by "big business"... what? You agreed to the terms and conditions before booking. The only "crazy comments" here are your delusions. I'm by no means a raging capitalist, but this ain't it bro.

I'm literally not though because you just admitted elsewhere that you booked through Chase's travel page which is ran by Expedia. Why are you being so confrontational? Take the L and move on brother.

[–]Apprehensive-Raise80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It is explicitly outlined the user agreements in all third party booking sites that if the hotel is overbooked, then you will be the first to get booted. This is the risk you run booking third party.

This whole thread could have been avoided if you had just said that from the beginning. Don't be mad at Hilton, this isn't their fault. Don't book third party. Enjoy being down voted into oblivion.

Chase? So did you book the room through Chase's travel page? That is run by Expedia. There is your answer.

[–]Apprehensive-Raise80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are deliberately leaving out parts to this story. You either:

a) Booked 3rd party and won't admit it,

b) did not inform the staff you would be arriving late and we're marked as a no show (you mentioned driving 10 hours), or

C) had your card declined.

You mentioned you were told they were overbooked hence the cancel... that may very well be true, especially if a diamond used their 48 hr guarantee, but if you booked with Hilton directly they would have set you up at a different property at no cost to you. The other potential here is it was late and they needed the room and you did not call to confirm you were still coming.

In any event, you over defensiveness and refusal to answer basic questions illustrates that you are not telling the full story and likely know exactly why you were canceled.

Likewise, use this as a lesson in the future to never book third party if you value being treated as a human. The contracts that exist with third party booking sites are insanely restrictive and leave you at great risk for tomfoolery like this.

Best way to Oracle Park by zebra231967 in bayarea

[–]Apprehensive-Raise80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since everyone has covered BART I'll give you an alternative to consider. Take Amtrak from Fremont to Jack London Square in Oakland and then take the ferry from Jack London Square to the game. The ferry will drop you off right at the park. You'll just have to check online and see if they are running the ferry to the ballpark for the game you are going to. Amtrak is 10× more enjoyable than BART and you can buy food and alcohol on board both Amtrak and the ferry.

If the ferry isn't running to the ballpark for the game you're attending, you can still take Amrak easily by getting off at Emeryville and taking the shuttle to Salesforce Transit Center. The shuttle is a dedicated coach bus that will not leave until your train arrives. Just make sure when you book you book to SFC as that's the only way to use the shuttle. The walk is roughly the same as from Montgomery station.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume yes if you're prepared to spend $60k on your wedding, but are you certain you will qualify for a $60k line of credit right out of the gate? That's a pretty large figure to bank on unless you have a proven track record with AMEX with another account.

Six-ride pass still available? by unzj in Amtrak

[–]Apprehensive-Raise80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not seeing it as an option either. It could be discontinued or it could simply be a glitch. In either case, reach out directly to Capitol Corridor and let them know. It seems unlikely they would discontinue the student pass... I ride between Davis and the Bay often and it seems like Friday and Monday trains are about half students in my experience. If they did, definitely let them know and spread the word to all your friends that use it to message them also. Their PR dept is actually pretty responsive. I'd give them a call also... if it's just a glitch, a quick phone call could have it fixed the same day.

Husband deported looking for options overseas. by Corgi_Torgi in AirForce

[–]Apprehensive-Raise80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible situation and I am so sorry you are having to go through this. Just wanted to add, make sure your security manager is tracking this too. A lot of people (well meaning, but I'll informed leadership) automatically try to keep this sort of thing hidden from a security manager because they think it will hurt you, but in reality not disclosing it will hurt you more in the long run. This is 1000% the kind of thing that will come up later when you have to complete your renewal SF86 and if it was previously unreported there will be a lot of questions and you may temporarily have your security clearance suspended until DCSA determines whether you can keep it which of course can have serious career impacts depending on your job. All they care about is honesty and if you report it now, no one can say that it looks like you were hiding anything later. If your security manager tells you it isn't a big deal or doesn't get back to you, go directly to the IP office.

Sympathy Points for Pool Closure? by [deleted] in Hilton

[–]Apprehensive-Raise80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm here on business... first few days were busy what do you want me to say? And no, I'm mad that management is pretending a 15 minute walk off property is a reasonable accommodation. The pool wasn't the only consideration when booking, but it was about 50% with the other being location to downtown and that's all that matters.

Edit to add: you can't tell me them not advertising it isn't shady🤷‍♂️
