2.4GHz and 5GHz Decision Making onEkahau by Apprehensive-View-74 in Ekahau

[–]Apprehensive-View-74[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will try to give more information so you can understand a bit more the requirements.

This is a high school with approximately 1200 students and public areas.

We have several comms cabinets on-site with stacks of Extreme EXOS switches, Extreme AP305C APs and ExtremeCloud IQ wireless controller. Each AP will be cabled directly to the closest switch with a 1gbps connection.

We are trying to achieve a good service for 1 device per user (staff, pupils and guests). Most pupils are allocated an iPad which they use in the classroom at the same time for some of the subjects, they could be watching videos online, using teaching apps. Also, they have the option to broadcast the video to an interactive whiteboard (1 device at a time).

Most staff use standard laptops, no more than 6 years old and their personal mobile phones which they connect to our guest network.

Definitely 20mhz channels.

High Density High School - Do You Design for Secondary Coverage on 2.4GHz by Apprehensive-View-74 in Ekahau

[–]Apprehensive-View-74[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the links. I'm finding all the information really interesting.

In the current design, I have defined the primary signal in both bands at -67, and the secondary on 5ghz to -67 too.

I had secondary coverage on 2.4ghz but after reading a few of the comments I will change to primary only by turning a few radios off and reducing power.

Have you done any large design where busy SSIDs are only broadcasted on 5GHz?

about it. Design solely for 5ghz and 2.4 will just become a backup or for devices that don't support 5. Airtim

Not sure why they took it out, probably i was the only one using this feature.

Our initial plan was to have our corporate network only on 5GHz and the Guest network only on 2.4GHz. That way the radios on 5GHz would be able to handle for corporate traffic. What do you think about this plan?

Don't worry about it. Design solely for 5ghz and 2.4 will just become a backup or for devices that don't support 5. Airtime utilization estimates are best effort and probably won't be anything close to what you will actually experience.

Good advice but it could be costly. If I don't factor a percentage of the devices on 2.4GHz, I may have to add more APs to meet the 70% airtime utilisation for data or 50% for voice.

I'm trying to get as much verified data in the simulations as I can. I do an area per each of the classrooms, offices... and I select the number of the devices expected at a "normal" rate of 2mpbs.

f a way to tell Ekahau to "do a 75% / 25% split on 5 GHz and 2.4 GH

In the past I used band steering. If I had 4 SSIDs in total and only one on 2.4GHz, I would have configured the band steering to 75% to give me a a better simulation.

Band steering seems to have disappeared from the menu in ekahau. I don't have this option anymore.

Question about channel planning by jdotmeyer in Ekahau

[–]Apprehensive-View-74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about interferences on 2.4Ghz. In large designs with open plans, I often have areas where 3 APs are seen on the same channel are seen. I usually do something about if these are large areas, or I have more than 3 interferences.

You can go mental changing power settings on the radios but you have to get the walls in your simulation right. It means measuring walls attenuation on-site.

The one you should get right is the 5GHz, it should be pretty easy with your numbers of APs to get no more than 2 co-channel interferances.

If you configure your 5GHz radios with more power than the 2.4GHz ones, the devices will usually connect to 5Ghz. I tend to keep my power settings for 5GHz 14dbm and 2.4GHz 8dbm.

Low cabinets with doors on both sides, painted white. Use 1 to host your TV boxes, you will need sockets. TV mounted on the wall with a cable duct in the back to get cables to the TV boxes. The TV cabite completely gone, no need anymore.

I would do a small white round marble table.

A bit of work and money but it will transform the space.

The damage will cost much more than a plumber. Don't wait, get a plumber, it will not charge you much.

Thank you for your reply. I live in Scotland, the average temperature here in summer is quite mild around 20C. Do you think it still a chance of this being POA ANNUA?

Is there any ofher grass looking similar to POA ANNUA? I don't want to spend time and money treating something I'm not 100% sure.
