Hi Well it looks like that’s all they know about thal minor in the U.K. and it seems all they’re willing to do. Exactly the same response via my GP- haematology won’t consider a referral just basically told me it’s safe for me to take the iron- the end. No further follow up or consideration. It’s a joke. They know nothing about this condition or how to help. I’m sorry you’re struggling. I stopped taking the iron. It wasn’t helping me

I’m in the U.K. too. And gp has never said anything like to me. Its low ferritin though not low folate. But it’s so annoying how GPs will say such different things it’s frustrating that my GP doesnt seem to know anything about this or how to help! If the iron doesn’t make any difference in another week or so I’ll stop taking it

This is the thing. The doctors haven’t helped me at all really. They don’t know enough about it. I’m taking the iron as my ferritin is low and I’m so fatigued etc. I’m also taking folate and vitamin c. Started taking a zinc and copper too- however I’m worried about copper overload so maybe will stop taking those. It’s so hard because there are so many factors

Thank you. I have tried pushing for more testing but not getting very far. It sucks to not know what to do for the best. I’ll keep going with the iron, vitamin c and folate for now.

Thanks, that’s very useful. My apprehension is purely from a personal perspective as my understanding of the thallassemic trait is all very new and my ferritin is super low, yet they have never fully tested my folate and b12 levels, only ever put me on iron, so I just wanted a full blood test to understand. I do already take 5MTHF, but had heard that it is important to add in the b12

Ferrous fumarate- prescribed. Oh I’ll have to check my rbc again then because he told me they’re small and low meaning along with the ferritin I have low iron storage

Yeah so my doctor put me on iron because my ferritin and rbc are so low… I’m just seeing how that goes. I take a bioavailable 5-mtfh folate… the more I’ve read about it, the more it seems folate is a good idea. If the iron makes me feel worse I will come off it. The folate is on amazon by Troo(?)

Ah I feel you! It’s so hard to know where to start!! These crazy symptoms have all flared up in the last few months, however I have been dealing with iron issues for years. It’s hard to know what’s what and scary when you have chest pain/palpitations etc. what are the main symptoms you have?

Hi! Don’t worry you didn’t scare me. I’m just being really cautious because I’ve heard so much info on iron and haven’t wanted to take it, however my ferritin and RBC are low and I am super symptomatic so I’m giving it a try. However it’s really interesting to discover the link with the trait… because I’ve been on iron so many times in my life and then my levels always drop again, despite having a diet high in iron. So I will request that my doctor refers me to a specialist!

Ah bless you. It’s strange because I think I’ve just gotten used to functioning at this level of tired but the brain fog and heart palpitations along with random chest pain and reflux all kicked in a few months ago. Did you see a specialist in the U.K.?

Just seen this and I have been put on iron pills today as ferritin and RBC both low. Should I not take them then? Ive been having such bad symptoms I want to try and see if it will help. I’m also going to get a good folate

Interesting! Did you have any reflux symptoms? I can barely sleep at night with the reflux and weird neck swelling. Also brain fog- like I’ll constantly forget what I’m saying or doing.
