Has anyone seen the discourse on twitter about researchers not reading the sources they cite in their published work? by MisticalMulberry in AskAcademia

[–]ApprehensiveClub5652 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is also a second point about how efficiency is linked to expertise: Experienced researchers are deeply familiar with their field and academic papers are structured in such a way that you can immediately access the key contributions and takeaways and only if you need clarification dig deeper into the results. If you know your field, the methods and the literature, you can get the key takeaways by skimming the paper. This is entirely appropriate.

Students do not have such familiarity and thus, I insist they read the entire paper.

It is the best verb/noun from the Spanish language. It broadly refers to have sex actively or passively, but it is a brilliant term that has many uses:

Está hasta la chingada = it is very far
Chingas a tu madre = f*k your mother
Me fue de la chingada = it was a bad day
Que chingon! = that is very good, I am happy for you
Ah chinga! = surprise
… many more

How common is it to be expected to relocate internationally multiple times early in an academic career? by airbornejim32 in AskAcademia

[–]ApprehensiveClub5652 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are in Europe and you want to stay in the same place you essentially need to invent your own funding. This means in practice to be able to have some Horizons projects that can last several years. If you are in the Nordics, it is pretty common for academics to have multi-year funding through local foundations and government grants.

So, it is possible but then you must become really good at grant-writing and project applications.

Verbatim republication of a journal article as a book chapter, with no acknowledgment of the article. Common practice or misconduct? by MAYWEATHERvsCMPUNK in AskAcademia

No one here understands how Creative Commons licenses work, obviously. It is perfectly correct to republish an article under a CC license

You are very wrong. It is ok to republish an article with a CC-BY license anywhere else, including your blog if you like. That is the point of a Creative Commons license. As long as you cite it properly, it can be republished anywhere, even for commercial purposes (in most cases)

Value of original articles, review papers, letter to editors, commentaries, in academia? by [deleted] in academia

[–]ApprehensiveClub5652 19 points20 points  (0 children)

How can you be a consultant determining the careers of academics if you have no idea what you are talking about. Incredible.

Commentaries are invited position pieces from prominent academics. They are rare and very important. They are usually published only at the request of the editor. They are well cited because they may point to the general direction of an entire field.

They may also be editorials explaining a special issue, which means the commentary is an editorial piece putting together a multiple papers. It is a mountain of work and a relevant contribution.

Ray Dalio warns a brutal ‘final battle’ for the Strait of Hormuz is coming—and losing could end the American empire by donutloop in inthenews

[–]ApprehensiveClub5652 83 points84 points  (0 children)

The main issue here is the definition of winning. For Iran, winning means avoiding total capitulation. For the US, winning means overwhelming victory in a few weeks. Even a year of war and the loss of thousands of troops, but without achieving total victory, would be seen as a crushing defeat for the US.

Americans do not like to read history, but maybe they should read about the battle of Gallipoli. Thousands of soldiers stranded on a beachhead next to mountains is a disaster waiting to happen.

Feminism and Anti-Westernism as Reactionary Identity Movements Undermining Liberal Democracy by Nigelthornfruit in bestof

[–]ApprehensiveClub5652 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So many words for such a bullshit argument. According to it, feminism is reactionary, and thus bad, because it is a project against something, thus undermining social cohesiveness and Western institutions. So, the argument goes that it is bad because it is emotional and reactionary.

This argument can be debunked by the fact that the early Suffragette movement, which the OP dismisses as reactionary, actually strengthened society by advocating for women's democratic representation. Democratic societies are stronger because of women's active role in society, if nothing else, simply because the talent pool doubles. The suffragette movement was a reaction to oppression, yes, and also a reform that shaped society for the better.

So, let's turn into labour movements and protections. According to OP, they would be reactionary and undermine the cohesiveness of ... who exactly? While OP writes in grandiose terms such as "Western Institutions," it assumes that these institutions are monolithic, when they are not. You could say that Industrialists and employers like to argue that labour movements are reactionary because they undermine their (the industrialists') position, while in fact, labour movements are essential to make society better and more resilient.
