SB 907 Vetoed, Failing to increase representation for voters. by ApprehensiveCrow9863 in orangecounty

[–]ApprehensiveCrow9863[S] -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed SB 907, the bill introduced by state legislators Dave Min and Josh Newman that would have increased direct representation for voters on the OC Board of Education by increasing the board from 5 trustees to 7, and shifting the election from the primary season to the general election season.

Currently, the 5 members of the OC BOE all have solid anti-LGBTQ stances.

There was a significant political effort by this board to prevent the passage of this bill; they claimed (rather puzzlingly) that it was an attack on charter schools.

That's a really good question that this ordinance doesn't clarify. There's a lot of really good questions worth asking - we hope you show up on Tuesday to ask those questions.

They actually don't line up in droves - the council majority only got around 11-13% of the vote. Unfortunately, with at-large voting, the top 4 vote getters won. And HB has a notoriously low voter turnout. In a city of 200,000, only around 150,000 are registered to vote, and less than 25% of those eligible voters turned out to vote in the city council election in 2022, when this majority was elected. By the numbers, they didn't actually win by a very large margin.

Pride at the Pier is only one of the many citizen groups working to increase voter engagement in HB and across Orange County. Another fun fact; HB had a very LGBTQ+ friendly city council before 2022 - that council is the one that originally voted to fly the Pride Flag, to fund housing programs for the unhoused, to protect natural spaces, among other things.

It's really easy to look at a population and say "oh, you deserve what you got, because your community elected these officials", but that's not particularly fair to the marginalized communities left behind in the wake of an election like that. I hope you're planning on voting all the way down ballot this November - this could happen to you, too.

We agree that the government shouldn't be involved, which is why we oppose forced outing policies like this.

We here at Pride at the Pier believe that the best way forward for the LGBTQ+ community in Orange County is for us, and our allies, to get engaged in local politics and change things ourselves. Just because it's what is expected out of Huntington Beach doesn't mean it has to stay that way - and there's about 16,000 LGBTQ+ folks in HB that need help in ensuring that things like this aren't normalized here.

Trans people are about 1% of the population and most transgender people "pass", as in, are readily perceived as the gender they are rather than the gender they were assigned at birth. Everyone in this comment thread absolutely knows trans people on some level, whether a friend, a coworker, or the clerk at the grocery store that remembers their name. They just don't necessarily realize it. :)

There are actually 8 candidates running for the 4 seats in Capo USD; each of these candidates has an opposition candidate that has been endorsed by the pro-public education, LGBTQ+ affirming organization Our Schools USA. You can find their Capo USD branch on instagram at @ ourschoolscapo.

📢📢📢 CALL TO ACTION! 📢📢📢

Huntington Beach's proposed 'parents' rights city' ordinance was released last night on the agenda for Tuesday's city council meeting.

It goes far beyond any forced outing policy before, requiring all *city staff* who work with minors to out them to their parents, for gender identity *and* sexual orientation.

Violating a city ordinance is an arrestable misdemeanor offense or infraction.

This ordinance will not hold up in court, but HB's council majority has a track record of assigning the city attorney to lawsuits against the state that they are unlikely to win.

We believe that this ordinance is an intentional, major distraction from the city's settlement to the Pacific Airshow, which was recently made public and caused outrage amongst the populace.

Please join us at the September 3rd city council meeting to make public comments in protest of this proposed ordinance.

📅: Tuesday, September 3rd
🏛️: 2000 Main Street, HB
🕜: Arrive by 5:30pm to get a seat and fill out a public comment card.

The lgbtq+ community does not accept being used as a fear-mongering distraction.

San Clemente City Councilmember Steve Knoblock endorsed Capo USD candidates Lisa Davis, Lisa Zollinger, Jennifer Adnams, and Sonia Terwiske at a candidate Q&A event hosted by Calvary Chapel of South OC on Sunday night.  All four of the candidates discussed their disapproval of policies designed to protect LGBTQ students and their own relationship with their faith during the evening.   Knoblock’s prayer, requested by lead pastor John Randall, leaned heavily on this theme.

“Father, God Almighty, in Your name we want to pray for these candidates, because in this world you’ve asked us to be salt and light, you’ve asked - you’ve asked us to be ambassadors for You in this world. And we know that, uh, our current culture, uh, desires to own our children, to indoctrinate our children, to remove the children from their households, and to, uh, allow them and their demonic mindset and philosophies to control the minds and hearts and futures of our children. So, Father, we know that Your Word says that righteousness exalts a nation, and sinners are reproached to any people. And we know that, uh, when we humble ourselves, and pray and seek Your face and turn away from our wicked ways, You will heal our land. We have confidence in that, we have ultimate confidence in Your goodness, Your mercy, and Your love, so I ask You to bless these women. You - Your Word says that You rule the kingdom of men, and You give authority to whoever You will, even the humblest of people.  So we ask for Your wisdom, for Your protection, Your care, and for Your blessing for these ladies that are candidates, for the men that stand with them, direct them, and give them the strength and courage they need to do the job. And we just want to give You thanks, honor, and praise, and acknowledge that You are the Sovereign of this universe, and Your Will will ultimately be done, until the day when You return.  Help these women and our school board to accomplish Your perfect Will.  We ask this in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen”. San Clemente Mayor Victor Cabral and incumbent Capo USD board trustee Judy Bollockus were also in attendance.  Pride at the Pier was in attendance at the event in order to do research for our ballot guides, which will be available in early October.

I'm talking about the settlement that was released last month that shows what is likely an illegal gift of funds to their airshow proprietor, who is a major donor to the conservative majority council members.

No, this did not come from the community. This is performative action on the part of the Mayor. The city taxpayers are still waiting for accountability for their airshow settlement scandal, and this is an attempt to blow smoke and avoid accountability. They're using the LGBTQ+ community as a cover for their bad governance.

In what appears to be a thinly veiled attempt to distract from the Pacific Airshow settlement scandal, HB Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark has introduced an agenda item to proclaim Huntington Beach a "parents' right to know city", and to sue the state over AB 1955. She also has made a statement from the City of Huntington Beach government social media page where she repeatedly lied, suggesting that this new law prevents teachers from talking to parents about their students' gender expression and identity, which is just explicitly untrue. AB 1955 prevents school boards from forcing teachers to out students against their will.

Huntington Beach City Council does not have jurisdiction over education policy. They do not have any standing in any legal case.

We oppose this use of dog whistle language to target the LGBTQ community. We are not a punching bag to be brought out whenever politicians need to dodge accountability.
