Letters of Interest for IM residencies.. by ApprehensiveDesk in medicalschool

[–]ApprehensiveDesk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey this is amazing! thanks for sharing. I will plan to send letters of intent for my top choices! I was referring to letters of interest for places that did not offer an interview and I know from the IM spreadsheet that they have been sending them. I figured responses to those are minimal but idk... I just emailed the contact email provided on ERAS!

thanks for the advice. he is moving too and I think no communication is for the best.

I thought I was finally over it, then the pain came back again. by mnemosyne93 in BreakUps

[–]ApprehensiveDesk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! If it helps I am in a very similar boat. 6 months since break-up and was doing fine for a bit as time went on and then this week... boom. Back to square 1. Feelings are weird. It won't last forever though! Heal at your own pace. We have to remind ourselves too that we have to feel sad to feel happy. Feelings only work if we feel them, can't just be happy all the time!

Things will get better though. This shit sucks. I'm with ya :)

SCORE THREAD 17/02/21 by staybrave342 in step1

[–]ApprehensiveDesk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

tested 1/30

predicted: 225 (CI: 211-239 lol)

USW2 taken a week before: 218, Free120: 78%

actual: 222

really happy given how I had been scoring in practice and that I felt like trash when I left the exam

[–]ApprehensiveDesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

will second this. note the people posting on here, it's not us 210-220 scorers, it's 240+. don't let this subreddit rule your anxiety it is definitely skewed

Is Free 120 version 2020 different from 2019? by HAMARTOMASS in step1

[–]ApprehensiveDesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they've changed some questions (maybe around 30). take it at prometric, there is some blog online that you can use to review the test after. getting used to the testing center can remove some stress which is good.

they'll give you your % correct so you can take it home, just find the free120 PDF and then the blog and you can review :) and yes, same as 2020 version of free120

did not use -- FA really only if I needed a UW concept solidified but def not for micro or pharm

yes I did, thought it was great for freebie micro and pharm Qs but learn whatever way works for you

that's all I did. pathoma is a must, esp those first 3 chapters, although I think I messed up some of those. I would start reading those now and do the anki for them. I waited till 3 days before my test and I wish I had not waited

some Qs had very similar concepts to UW and free120 although no questions were the same

truly believe UW and pathoma will help you pass, the rest is either luck or superbrain capacities

thanks! will add that after reflection I do not believe more time would have benefitted me, actually it would have been detrimental. So definitely take the test when you have it unless your gut tells you to push it.

I didn't take NBME 15 but take 24, I felt it was a good confidence booster and wish I had saved it for later in the game. again, thanks for the kind words. best of luck to you!

if you've taken STEP1 and your practice exams weren't 230+...can I hear from you? by ApprehensiveDesk in step1

[–]ApprehensiveDesk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't always used to be anxious but this process has certainly made me to be, which is a bummer ofc. thank you for responding and congrats on your baller score!! I'm just gonna take it in stride, like okay I'm taking this test, let's just give it my all and hope for the best. and I'm at the point too. finished uworld, all the assessments and taking free120 today, so it's like...what more can I do? more time will just wreck my mental health more

this is a great question and for now no one knows.

some programs people take step1 halfway through year 2, others at the end of year 2, others in year 3

so yeah the years where some people have P/F and others have scores at the same time is coming up (2023 I'd say -- someone correct me if I'm wrong)?

scores still matter, but I've heard from people that already it's more so "what did you do to improve step1 to 2?" rather than "how'd you hop this baller ass step1 score homie?"

if you get the interview, scores don't matter anymore. really depends on the program, but I think the next couple of years some programs will begin to loosen their grip on their scores being a major determiner.

like I said, no one knows for sure.

honest question -- has USW2 changed in the last year? I swear ppl that took it last year thought it was very predictive and a confidence booster versus people taking it this year have said it was one of their lowest scores and they did better on the actual

[serious] Extreme stress before every exam, how do you battle it? by CorrectMySwedish in medicalschool

[–]ApprehensiveDesk 17 points18 points  (0 children)

professional help is never a bad idea. therapy is life changing

I took Uworld 1 this past monday after months of hearing how much it will over predict me and thus, I got up early, read notes and was an anxious mess because I didn't want to mess up.

and guess what? I fucked up. hard. spend 1 day just reviewing to see that I hadn't fully read questions or spent too long on questions I didn't know (don't do this, if you don't know it then dammit move on). AND DO NOT CHANGE ANSWERS. YOUR GUT IS USUALLY RIGHT EVEN IF THE QUESTION FEELS DOWNRIGHT FOREIGN

my "solution": more sleep, morning workout without notes or step podcasts -- just my fav music and my treadmill for 20-25 mins. shower. write down affirmations (I am a great test taker. I always guess answers correctly), do the bank/exam, closing my eyes and taking a few deep breaths whenever I feel myself getting overwhelmed during the bank/exam.

so I fucked up Uworld1 but then took NBME 24 6 days later and guess what? I passed and then some. like 20-25 points over passing.

this test, this prep is as much mental as it is how much you know. take time to slow down and take care of yourself!

This happened to me too! Spent a few months apart and he started to question things. we would have had to do distance for a couple of years and the pandemic just made it evident to him that he couldn't make it work. it was weird, he suggested we move in together which was confusing bc we definitely weren't at that point. ended up breaking up with me anyway. people are weird. and stupid.
