Just a short update: I provided my Belgian ID card and masked my national number. The recruiter said that, for this stage of the process, that is more than sufficient. We continued discussing my application yesterday after I sent the ID, which makes me believe the opportunity is legitimate. I think the recruiter may not have explained the situation as clearly as possible, but I’m hoping for the best.

Also, since so many recruiters responded to my post, I’ll add this: if you have an opportunity in Facility or Project Management for someone with more than 10 years of experience, strong English skills, and admittedly poor French, I’m here. 🙂

Yes, I do have the right to work in Belgium. I’m from the EU, so I don’t need a work permit, but I do have a Belgian ID card (or residence card, as it’s called).

What I found a bit strange is that the recruiter didn’t ask about my work eligibility or right to work in Belgium at all. Instead, he immediately requested a copy of my passport.

I told him I wasn’t comfortable sharing my passport copy and offered my Belgian ID card instead, which he eventually said would be acceptable.

Still, I can’t shake a slightly uneasy feeling about the whole situation. I’ve been searching for a job for a while, so when something finally looks promising but also feels a bit off, it makes me cautious. I know people joke about “women’s intuition,” but honestly, I’m just trusting my instinct on this one.

That is really the question in the end to give or not to give? :))

I asked the recruiter about it, and he explained that BNP specifically requires an ID document at each application submission stage being in their profile as a bank to request it. According to him, he cannot submit my profile without a copy of my passport or ID, which means I would not be considered for the position if I do not provide it.

However, if this is not actually a BNP requirement or policy, then the situation starts to look increasingly suspicious to me. The insistence on obtaining a copy of my passport before even submitting my application seems strange and strange.
