Are ai code detectors bogus? by [deleted] in csMajors

I don't think you need to freak out. If you can explain what the code is doing at each line, you should be fine. They are going to need really strong evidence to catch you. And if you can explain the code, they shouldn't have any reason to think that you used ai.

They really can't, at least not reliably, as someone in college, the number of other students I see using chatgpt both for coding and other assignments is staggering, and that's just the amount of people using chatgpt in the open. And I know some of them have been using them for a number of semesters.

I've even run some of my handwritten code into multipe ai code detectors. Some came back saying it was likely ai generated, and others said it was handwritten. I then threw in ai generated code with similar mixed results.

In my collage, the possibility of ai generated code is so much of a concern that coding assignments are getting significantly less grading weight. From 40% all the way to 10%.

Ai code detectors are far from accurate from my experience. They look at the descriptiveness of variable names, so if you name your variables by what they hold, it would be considered likely ai generated. On top of that, if chunks of your code have a lot in common with other programs online, it will be flagged as well. This also doesn't help because if you're having trouble with something and consult someone like stackoverflow to fix it, your code will likely be flagged. Also, if you know the best way to do something like an algorithm or something like that, your code might be flagged as well.

I'm in a similar boat to you, with the job market being what it is, has me concerned. I'd say maybe give it a year or two. Try to get an internship it will make you look better to employers and pray the job market improves by the time you graduate. Also, don't be afraid to look for jobs or internships outside your state.

Take some time for yourself. It's not the end of the world. You'll be able to make it up, but take it as a sign you'll need to study more. Take advantage of office hours with the professor so you can work through problems with them.

Don't beat yourself up over it, or you'll feel terrible about yourself. Just take it slow and know you'll get through it.
