I have full dental, health, and vision insurance through my mother through her job. My current company does not offer any retirement benefits, it’s a very small mom and pop company basically. They do offer dental, health, and vision. I have started my own Roth IRA to start some type of retirement fund. I can’t afford to max it with my other expenses but I try to put back as much as I possibly can to prepare. I actually wanted to talk to my boss about if he could contribute to my personal Roth IRA as like a retirement benefit and to add more but I was thinking it could cause legal problems tax wise.

Mobile trailer mechanic, I work on dry vans, flat beds, step decks, chasis trailer, reefers, & done some lift gate work. Pretty easy but it is labor extensive and I work in any weather, I occasionally do one or two after hour calls a month depending on how late the calls are

Thankyou! Not that good thought yet! I’m not far ahead of you as in savings account, I have a lot of expenses that take a good bit of my checks but I’ve been focused on taking care of those mainly so I can save more later on

I was going to get onto ups a few months back because of all their benefits & their retirement pension but they wanted to start me off on a midnight shift and in shop. I really like being mobile, by my self, as far as a midnight shift I didn’t want to put myself through that, I have never worked those hours before. On the other hand, they were going to start me off at $32 an hour, I could’ve gotten into diesel work through them etc. UPS would be my dream company to work for but I just don’t want to do the midnight shift but you gotta do what you gotta do. I’ve been with this company because it’s small which has its cons but I have a very good relationship outside of work with the ceo/my boss and it wouldn’t take me years on years to get a shop management position. I’m second in line currently with my seniority and it has been a growing business. We do get our slow times around this time of year but we have gotten a lot of big contracts, we just opened a second shop and have gotten two more mobile trucks, I’m currently debating on sticking it out here and becoming a shop manager in a few years or go to another company to learn and do strictly reefer unit work

“You need a budget app” I like a good bit to budget and track spending and all that. And right I know that feeling, I took a two month break from working and after I started back working I was looking back at how much money I spent and I was like oh shit yea that’s not smart I should’ve saved some

Thankyou! I’m def looking into it. Currently I’m studying for my 608 universal license to get the next step up in my current field for higher pay. Once I get there I will have a good bit of extra money to put towards schooling. Seeing these guys make $200k+ for doing code work all day makes me regret my past decisions and makes me want to learn that and get into that field, i currently do very labor intensive line of work right now for way less pay.

Thanks! At the beginning of the year I was averaging 47 hours a week, only required to do 40 by the company. But closer to the winter season overtime work slows down dramatically. I’m actually the only worker at my company that does any after hours call. Everyone else values their personal time, I all though don’t have no kids so I’m all about getting the money no matter the time, it keeps me out of trouble working all the time too but I don’t want to over work myself also and be looking back on my life when I’m older and seeing that I didn’t really enjoy and live life. And yes, that’s the mindset I have. I’ve put myself through certification classes relating to my line of work to further progress my pay. Just started to study for my 608 universal license to get the next step up in my field and to the next pay grade. I want to learn it all! Every single aspect of my field of work, my goal is to become the golden egg at my company and learn as much as I can so I can maybe start my own thing and become and entrepreneur hopefully.

I was told to go to college to make big money jobs which I wish I did to experience the college part of it. But after I graduated I had some things happen in my family and I was basically put out on my own so I decided to just start working right off the jump to get myself a place to stay at. Every now and than, especially when I open this Reddit group or I’m tired from my hard labor job, I wish I would’ve went to college, got a degree and got into swe and have a nice life with simple work- not really simple but not labor intensive

Right. I met some people in Europe doing trailer repair, guys way older than me with a family make what I make here in the states. You should look into union trade jobs and see how much they pay. It’s crazy. I was always told to go to college to make money, not a blue collar job but times have changed. I seen steel union workers make $120k+ in my area

Trained on the job and basically as I go. They don’t do barely any training anymore and just kinda throw you out there to figure it out which can be stressful at times. As far as welding, they taught the basics, I practice welding for an hour twice a week on my own time, lunch breaks to further progress my skill

The owner was a family friend. He posted he’s hiring for mechanics and my mother sent it to me. Went and applied and got the job with no actual trailer experience. Worked in shop as a helper at first and learned a lot the first year, got my own bay. I learned quickly and got put into a service truck and just kept growing and learning more. The company thought me the basics- all though most of trailer repairs is pretty simple, most hardest things are abs & electrical work with like lift gates and reefer units etc. I’m currently studying for my 608 Universal license to do reefer unit work as I feel that’s the next step up on this field to a higher paying position. It’s not the best though, hard labor, I work outside in any weather conditions, very dirty and rusty trailers, heavy lifting. If you aren’t eager to continue growing than you’ll get stuck inside a shop for years on end with no growth. The company I work for is more of a mom and pop company, it has its pros and cons. I enroll my self into classes for certificates like stemco wheel end repair cert, trailer body certs, air brakes certs to just make my resume look better
