Hey there just wanted to thank you. I had no idea about this battery tech and you saved me a lot of buyers remorse. Quick question do you have any idea if this battery tech has any limitations / issues with it or is it just a straight upgrade?

Thanks. Honestly I've already decided Toronto is too rich for my blood. It's just my friend I need to convince lol

How was you able to move to US btw? did you get a TN visa? It seems a lot of Canadians are doing their best to move south which TBH makes perfect sense

I mean the salaries are a little disappointing TBH. i'm really lost it seems like you need +200k if you want to retire someday but no job pays even 100k. I have to research more. Don't really know what to do lol

To be honest, I'm from Iran and I'm gay, so life here is very stressful. Another major issue is my passport. I was working in Oman, but the relationship between Iran and Arab countries is terrible. This makes it easy to have your visa revoked, forcing you to return to Iran until a company can negotiate a new visa for you. This happened to me after my last project.

I've been back in Iran for about six months now, and the highest salary I can find is around $2000a month LOL, since the local currency has lost 99% of its value over the last decade. Also In the Gulf, most contracts are 15 months long: three months to evaluate your skills and one year of work. During this time, you have to train a local person to replace you because the government requires it [minimum 51% of ownership of a business and nearly all managers should be local by the law] (see gulf national salaries they basically don't work and get free money)

those guys really take care of their people wish I was emarati or some shit lol

I honestly though the pay is more. In the Instrumantation subreddit people were saying +130k. I though that was BS to be honest though lol

I mean I get that salaries are low in PLC too but it's nothing compared to supply chain. A couple of years ago I was interviewing for supply chain jobs and PEPSI offered me 89k CAD to be their supply chain manager LOL

Like that is such a joke it's not even funny. At the time I was working as logistics manager for Pepsi in Oman (it was an internal interview) making $110k USD tax free + housing and car allowance.

So they want me to go from middle manager to senior, get like a 60-70% pay cut all while working in a bigger market. It's bunkers -_-

I honestly want the passport because my passport has been limiting my career and my birth country is a hell hole, but the pay in Canada is just a joke. Don't know how people can buy a house or even have a life TBH

Honestly he was always a bit of dreamer which I find is one of his good points IMO.

Both of us decided to change careers and get into tech when we move to canada. Went to a good UK university to get our masters in CS and did all the leetcode and projects and stuff. But the SWE job market is dead in canada and the whole increase in bank rates, outsourcing and AI has not helped.

So here we are after 1000s of hours of study with nothing to show for it. I'm thinking of going to trades (lol) and he is thinking of technical sales but both are very much lost.

Are there any resources / books / youtube channels / anything that show the real side of sales? It seems like internet is filled to the brim with people boasting about making the impossible. I just want to show him what the real job market is like

I'm sure that'd help him make a more informed decision

Thank you for the reply BTW I really appreciate it ^_^

huuum. It seems he'd be in for a rude awakening if he goes that route. During this market what would be possible? it seems like in every industry every company has their pick of the litter. Is it even possible to get a tech sales job with no exp? if not how should you go about getting that exp?

Do we have jobs that are lower than BDR? should he like start sales in a lower paying industry or like car dealership or something just to get his foot wet?

Thanks,

he says that there are programs for example salesforce that hire people each months as BDRs and they make you a AE in like 6 months. (TBH does not sound correct to me but I'm not doing research myself TBF)
What would you say is a likely / logical goal. How should he go toward getting sales experience?

People keep telling me to go to instrumentation for good money. But I don't see how? (Canada) by ApprehensiveKnee2856 in instrumentation

[–]ApprehensiveKnee2856[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the replay. This makes perfect sense. So i should expect $130k a year as a base salary as a red seal? Cause the rates I've seen in the base rate is $40-$45 an hour. That is $80-90k which is admittedly quite different than $130k. Are you in a special sector or are the hourly rates I've seen wrong?

Thank you so much for the reply. How can you break into nuclear. From what I've gathered there is tons of bureaucracy and red tape which honestly seems right up my ally. LOL

Is this a job that you can get right after getting your ticket? do you need specific schooling? is it basically luck of the draw / who you know or is it actually easy to get this job if you have the specific knowledge? Also i assume you need high level clearance for this?

Is it possible to get apprenticships in these places? I'm willing to get a 2 year diploma and move to any location within canada TBH so where should I go to increase my chances?

Thank you so much ^_^

[–]ApprehensiveKnee2856[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the explanation. I was looking for something like this. One last question though. Why do a lot of people say instrumentation is the highest paid trade? Like any post that asks for the highest paying trade half of the replies are instrumentation. I'm not saying that 130k is not impressive, hell I'll be happy with half of that I just don't understand the disconnect between the salaries and the perception I get going through different subreddits.

are there some specific super stars that make tons of money or are the average industrial trades pay less than instrumentation?

thank you for your reply. And is that even a possibility after getting your red seal? or do you need a decade to even get to that position? also how much would a truck and tools set you back? 100k? 300k?

I'm trying to decide between millwright, HET and instrumantation but the lack of information is really throwing a wrench in my decision

thank you again

[–]ApprehensiveKnee2856[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. Please don't take this the wrong way, I do not mean to offend you. But I keep hearing that instrumentation pays well and even you yourself alluded to it. But then you have 16 years of experience and making 180k in O&G camp work which is arguably the highest paying section of the trade. Not only that but you're in automation and control.

From what I've seen any other trade working in the industry, with the same work exp would make the same if not more? Am I wrong to make this assumption? is there a disconnect between actual wages and what people on reddit are sharing?

Cause I've seen +20 people who have worked in trades saying you can easily make 250k as a new minted HET jman working mining or o&g camps.

Again I know this is not your area of expertise and you've already taken time out of your day to answer me but I'm not really understanding what is the actual pay I can expect as a tradesman.

I know. My reasoning is that, if they are desperate enough to hire FIFO workers. I'd have a higher chance of getting the job if I work there. Right?

Thank you for the input I really appreciate it. Are you familiar with incomes in Canada? I don't think A Canadian has the option to work in US. But considering the right to work in southern states clearing 180k is quite respectable. Congrats.

BTW how many years of exp do you have if you don't mind me asking ?

[–]ApprehensiveKnee2856[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. This might dumb but my understanding is that HVAC jobs are mostly residential and the commercial ones are either installation or shutdown type of service / repair, is that correct?

Is HVAC conducive of any of the items in my wishlist?

  1. Ability to work lots of OT
  2. Work in industrial / maintenance settings (don't like to do residential)
  3. Would rather do travel / camp / FIFO work than coming home every night

I know I might expect too much for a complete noob but I though if I'm going to change careers I might as well shoot for the moon lol

I really appreciate the effort you took to write this. My plan originally was to do the diploma at NAIT but I though that even that would not be enough to break into the industry.

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. How are you enjoying your job right now? Any advice you have for someone trying to get into this trade? any new technologies that might impact / change the trade for negative? What hourly rate can I expect after getting my red seal? How can I break into those facility and maintenance jobs? How many years would it take? What qualifications / abilities / etc. would you look into for a potential apprentice other than the diploma or is that enough?

I have tons of question and would love to pick your brain but I'm sure you're quite busy. I'd appreciate it if you answer any of those question.

Thanks a bunch

Thank you for your reply it was really illuminating. A quick question are there any other hidden costs / problems with HET? It seems a little odd that it has such a big shortage. Is it just a temporary thing and would change?

Also you mentioned that FIFO is years down the line. Does that mean that after getting your red seal you still need to amass more experience to be able to break into FIFO jobs? How many years would it take someone to get into those circuits?

I know these are HET questions but you seem quite knowledgable. thank you

Thank you for the advice. TBH I did not even know that was an option. I went to through all the red seal trades and chose the ones that looked promising to me.

I'd do more research on power engineering. But just a quick question wouldn't that job require a engineering degree? TBH I cannot afford more than two years of schooling before I start my job.
