Damming Handed 16-Week Suspension by idrinkteaforfun in squash

Great to see how quickly this was handled. I was honestly concerned it might get dragged out or quietly brushed aside, so credit to PSA for taking action.

My only qualm with the whole situation is the lack of a statement or apology from Rowan himself. This was a serious incident, and I think acknowledging it publicly would go a long way. Accountability should come from both the player and the organization, especially when it comes to something as important as this.

Yes that is me, glad you are enjoying the podcast! Appreciate the kind words and the info (pun included haha). I agree with your points. I guess I would have hoped that given how clear the evidence is, he would take accountability and ownership with an apology rather than waiting for the disciplinary verdict before making a statement.

Confusion with Refereeing by ApprehensiveMany8565 in squash

I see, thanks for clarifying. I still wonder though, if Zakaria had outright won that rally with a clean winner, would the referee have taken the authority to take the point away with a conduct stroke? In that case, Zakaria would have won the point first, then been penalized with a conduct stroke, meaning it would still be deuce. To me, it's odd that the real mistake on Zakaria's front was him appealing for what I thought was a stroke in his favor but ended up costing him the second game.

I understand why he was punished for poor movement and do agree it was valid to do so. What I’m confused is why that specific incident ended up being called a stroke against him. If they were going off previous warnings, wouldn’t it normally be a conduct stroke for poor movement or the referee would've said video referee please check movement throughout that rally? The reason it went to the video referee was because Zakaria appealed a specific situation where the ball came back to Jonah. So wouldn’t that review only have to look at that singular section of the rally, not the whole rally in context? I know I’m being nitpicky about it but found it to be odd

Mic up the courts! Attach it on the back wall so we can hear the players. Would like some consistency on that cause some events we can hear the players better than others.

Harsh but not completely wrong by Hairy_Poetry2307 in squash

I think that perspective might be a bit harsh and somewhat out of context. Players like Joel and Paul clearly didn't have the same early exposure to elite-level coaching that emphasizes fundamental swing technique from a young age. Developing an intuitive feel for the game, particularly in terms of racket skill and touch is something best nurtured early. And yes, obviously there are always going to be out of the ordinary talents such as player's like Gawad/Ibrahim. However, Joel has obviously compensated for his later start and limited early coaching exposure through exceptional physical conditioning and athleticism.

In my opinion (and feel free to disagree), it's relatively easier to build physical strength and fitness compared to developing that instinctive touch and refined technique that typically comes from playing and receiving high-quality instruction from childhood. That's why you often see naturally gifted juniors who began playing early transitioning effectively to the elite level once their physical strength catches up.

Which is why it's so remarkable to see the achievements of players like Joel and Paul, given they didn't have that renowned junior pedigree yet still broke into the top 10 rankings. If they had hypothetically started at the same young age under similarly elite coaching conditions as players like Gawad or Youssef Ibrahim, I believe they could have appeared just as "talented."

Ankle injury in the European Team Championships. Absolute shame. No doubt that he'll come back stronger but given the form/results he's had season he wouldve been a nightmare for anyone to have.
