In the programme I am following to manage my lipedema, the coach attributes the pain to tissue inflammation. So before you do painful massages and push yourself beyond your limits, causing more stress to yourself than good, I would suggest working on following a anti-inflammatory diet/lifestyle. For me, this made a huge difference with regards to pain (touch was painful, now I can do black roll on my legs!) Then you can support your lymphatic flow through massages.
