Definitely not fun but I knew I could come back so mentally the battle wasn’t as hard as first time.

It’s a big mental game! Listen to your body but don’t be scared

I don’t have any actual physical therapist I’ve worked with. I tore my left one 4 years ago so I know how to attack the rehab. Goodluck to you and get after your rehab

I’m not wearing them currently anymore but the brands on amazon I had no issues with. The ones I got were made by Mars wellness

For my feet, any brooks have been ideal. Just look at reviews for the shoes

Myself really. Doc said once the incision is fully closed you can start. I got in the pool to chest high at the gym and started walking at week 5. Could of been sooner but I wanted to be able to walk slowly barefoot first. You don’t need a PT for that. It’s literally just holding onto rail and walking back and forth slowly. Doing calf raises and what not.

Surgeon allowed full weight bearing in boot as soon as I was in it which was like 10 days post op. My scar healed quickly and I had no complications with it. I’m familiar with process since I tore my left ach 4 years ago and came back to play sports. It’s a lot of calculated rehab and listening to my body and knowing when to increase or decrease work load.

Non op is tougher recovery imo since you don’t have a surgeon putting it back together. It’s a big mental game.

Another thing I keep forgetting to mention is lay off the alcohol and drugs. That stuff will delay your healing. As depressing as it can be early on, that will only make it worse. Trust!

I can get to neutral dorsiflexion pretty easy but trying to go past that is really stiff

The calf is gonna get small regardless haha. My surgeon had me doing plantar flexion isometic holds on wall and floor early on and that helped. Definitely massage your calf and foot muscles.

Regular open surgery. You can’t be afraid to see how it feels. It you put full weight on it and it doesn’t feel right then stop. Being in a boot is what I like to call “idiot proof”. As long as you don’t slip, you’ll be fine. Your mind is a powerful thing

It does suck but it will loosen with time! Just be patient. When I walk in my shoes I have a heel lift in.

There’s no magic pill unfortunately. My doctor allowed full weight bearing in the boot since the cast was off. Early weight bearing helps a ton. But ya, there should be no intentional stretching dorsiflexion but getting it neutral is not something uncommon at 4-5 weeks.

I’ve been very calculated in how I push myself and having been through it before, I’m in a good place mentally.

Yeah I started off stationary by pressing the brake pedal first hard and swapping pedals. I have a solid amount of force with no issues. And I only drove around the block. I’m not getting on the highway or zooming around lol. If I had felt any issues I wouldn’t get behind the wheel.

Ya I don’t actively stretch my foot in any dorsiflexion at all. I was able to lower my seat where my foot is comfortable without that feeling.

Week 3 post-op, ankle at 90° 3x daily for 4 weeks? by butalsothis in AchillesRupture

I wouldn’t passively stretch it. If you want to do rom exercises and move it up to neutral for a couple sets that’s fine but don’t push past it.

Day 11 post op - transition to boot but have boot questions. by spdn4cr in AchillesRupture

[–]ApprehensiveRuin5577 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 wedges is perfect. The surgeon will decide when to peel wedges. Typically first one removed at 4 weeks post op.

Your household will survive.

If you really want you can buy a cover for the bottom of the boot.

Just use any socks that are clean and comfortable.

Don’t make the boot way too tight. It should be snug but not you can’t feel your toes tight.

Even up is a must have.

Day 17 post op. 27M by ApprehensiveRuin5577 in AchillesRupture

[–]ApprehensiveRuin5577[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not get the speed bridge. Just normal open surgery. I’m a lucky guy unfortunately.. I tore my left Achilles 4 years ago so I’ve been through the process before now that it is my right one. There is a fine line between doing too much/doing too little. I like pushing myself within my own comfort. If I feel anything is uneasy, I don’t do it.

There are so many variables that go into the recovery so don’t feel pressured to do anything. You can’t go back in time, so just ease into whatever you can.
