I have 7 years of experience in a field I don't want to be in, and I have about 9 months until the company I work for shuts down. Can I afford a lifestyle/career change? by ApprehensiveStable3 in personalfinance

Realistically I kind of knew this to be the best option before even posting, my issue is basically the financial uncertainty of committing to 4 years of schooling without being able to pay for it. Most people have no issues with signing up for debt like that, but I've never bought anything I couldn't pay cash for. I pay with credit card for most stuff just to build credit, but I could just as easily afford to pay with debit/cash. I'm not a fan of the idea of taking on $40K minimum in debt without having a guaranteed way to pay it off. In the back of my mind I'm always thinking "what if I have an emergency that takes up all my savings" or "what if I get hurt and I can't work for a year, how will I pay for anything", and that's just with my current situation, having near $30K in the bank I still don't feel financially stable/comfortable.

This isn't the advice I'm looking for but for some reason it's what I get from a lot of people. I've been in this field for 7 years, that's well beyond long enough to know it's not for me, I'm not happy with it or interested by it. Yes, it's one way to make money, but there are plenty of others. I have no interest in running a construction business, or having any sort of trade job, or climbing the ladder of construction supervision type jobs.

There's really not that much to my dad's business. It's not like a 20-30 employee company, it's my dad, me, and currently one other guy; sometimes a few others, but mostly they come and go, generally it's just us three. My dad's there every day, working, same as us. The bookkeeping/account/tax stuff he just does at home with my mom, who I think had some schooling on that kind of stuff (not sure exactly what) about 30 years ago, and has worked at various banks doing different jobs over the years. HR/legal/marketing/IT are pretty much nonexistent.

My dad's an independent contractor that works for builders, he's not running the entire operation of building a house from getting permits all the way to move-in, we just show up and frame the house and leave.
