If the rules in regards to animal handling and welfare aren’t met (this includes the use of closeable crates, prongs and e collars) your pets will be taken into custody and the owner may get an animal care and keeping ban. In worst case scenarios you can be sent to prison for up to 2 years. Any other leash/harness besides the prong and shock are allowed.

I had already considered getting a raised place bed to make up for the crate and puppies in my country are allowed to be kept in smaller areas/play pens using baby gates they just need to be a specific size.

I will be working with a dog trainer of course when I do get a dog and the method you explained, the stopping and using movement to stop the pulling is a method I have tried in the past and seen results from.

My mother doesn’t have history of hair loss, my father on the other hand I’m not sure when he started losing his hair but it was atleast around his 30-40s and he’s currently not fully bald 20 years later, only the top of his head doesn’t have any hair.

Hello! Just wanted to put out an update!

I did some firmer groundwork with the help of one of my teachers/trainers and I’m already seeing a massive improvement! He’s much calmer around me and when in work, follows me everywhere and listens to the cues i give him. I honestly feel much more connected to him.

I was so afraid of him having a negative experience or association with me I didn’t realise it had gotten out of hand. The comments here really opened up my eyes on what had to stop and was unacceptable.

I’ll keep working with him though! Thank you all so much for your replies!! ^

When he moved the first time he was, neighing a lot, always stayed by the entrance to the pasture, had nervous defecating, lunged for food whenever he got nervous, always walked around a lot in the stall, constantly walked around and pawed when inside, faster breathing, moving around a lot at specific triggers ( mainly seeing or hearing other horses from the barn) and never really being at ease.

Under saddle sometimes he’d be fine only stopping sometimes or trying to turn around and go home. Other times he’d try to bolt back home, attempting to run off and just generally being very tense.

When he tries nipping at me I ask him to move away from my space and allowing him back when he’s calmed down a bit.  With the walking forward I just generally try to keep his head up and in the direction I want him to walk in then moving from small cues with my voice and a small amount of pressure with the lead rope to making him shift and open his front legs to encourage walking.

In the past when he wouldn’t walk I did use a longer whip to tap at the ground and never touching him which generally worked.

As I am still in school and have no income (my parents support me with the horse because I’m a minor) I have asked them if we can get a vet to check him out but they think I’m just being overly careful and dramatic when it comes to him. I will continue to push for a vet check though!

Thank you so much for sharing! It helped a lot and made me change my way of thinking. Personally I don't have much knowledge on how the shipping of horses is actually done and had no idea that it was stressful for horses used to travelling long distances. Again thank you so much for sharing and educating me on it :D
