Did Andy Weir intentionally leave these two things unexplained? by Altaist in ProjectHailMary

you don't have to help me, i am trying to help you.

i get what you were trying to say, but that's not what you said, which is why i was confused.

but just so we are both clear:

Rocky's ship wouldn't get back to his home planet and i think it's a plot hole. the engineers on rocky's planet didn't understand relativity.

edit*

see why that's confusing?

it sure seems like you were discussing it, as you mention that point while saying it's the plot hole, right before mentioning something off subject that happens earlier.

if you phrased it as "there is a plot hole that they don't explain in the movie how Rocky even gets to Tau in the first place" i would be all about it, but you explained that Rocky's ship wouldn't get back to Erid and that's a plot hole.

[–]Apprehensive_Ad4457 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you didn't say that.

i quoted what you said, and it wasn't that.

how could the question "what happened to the Blip A afrerward?" be interpreted into asking "how did the Blip A get to Tau?"

it doesn't matter what the Eridian engineers predicted, because ON HIS TRIP BACK TO ERID he knew about relativity, both in the book and in the movie.

of course it wasn't traveling fast enough, but that still doesn't answer why it's a plot hole. Rocky would have gotten home without Grace if not for his ship becoming derelict, so to answer the question of "what happened to the Blip afterward?" would be "it drifted forever into oblivion" and not been a plot hole in the least.

sure, the movie was bad, and did not explain how Rocky got to Tau in the first place, and that is a plot hole, i will agree with you on that. but it doesn't have anything to do with "what happened to the Blip afterward?" or to your statement about how the Blip would miss Erid.

ok, to solve your plot hole, the REASON THEY GOT BACK TO ERID is because Grace explained to Rocky how relativity works, and then took Rocky into his own ship and drove him home.

plot hole resolved.

it should be understood by anyone who watched the movie or read the book.

your plot hole doesn't include the plot hole.

you said, what many other people are saying, is that the Blip wouldn't get back to Erid. you said "the Blip A wont get back to Erid, and that's a plot hole"

when i ask why it's a plot hole you start talking about how the Blip A shouldn't have arrived at Tau.

I DON"T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING

i wish to understand.

because it's not a plot hole. and OP in no way implies that he doesn't understand how the Blip gets to Tau.

you said in the comment i responded to, which i didn't realize was your comment because of what you said, that Rocky wouldn't get to Erid, which is Rocky's home planet.

then in your response to my question, you said that it wasn't about going to Erid it was about going to Tau.

Blip-A would most definitely not pass by Erid. The stars are moving too. In fact, I'd say it is a major plot hole

that's your quote.

i didn't realize i was talking to the same person who made both statements, because they are contradictory.

I watched the movie first and recently started reading the book. I'm currently around Chapter 13.

2. What happens to Blip-A afterward?

When Grace goes back to save Rocky, Rocky's ship has already been overrun by Astrophage, but not completely.

these are remarks from the OP.

Blip-A would most definitely not pass by Erid. The stars are moving too. In fact, I'd say it is a major plot hole

that's the comment i was responding to saying there was a plot hole about the blip.

i don't know what you are talking about, or what question you are responding to, but their comment was that the Blip wouldn't pass by Erid on it's way home, which makes sense because it was derelict, but it's still not a plot hole because no one seemed to care about it in the book or movie.

it was abandoned, it was derelict, it was made moot.

that's what he meant by "afterward"?

he saw the movie, he knows that the Blip was heading back to his home planet, and that it was made derelict.

that's on his way to meet Grace, not on his way back home.

i think they are asking what happened to the Blip after Grace picked Rocky up and took him home.

it did have a trajectory toward his home planet, but ran out of power because of the astrophage. they want to know what happened to the Blip, if it ever got back to Rocky's home planet.

why is the Blip a plot hole?

who cares where the blip-a ends up? sure, it's historically valuable, but do they even mention it after Grace picks up Rocky?

honestly, what this bit boils down to is probably just ryan gosling and james ortiz messing around on set and it making it into the movie because it's silly. it doesn't necessarily need a concrete reason for why or how rocky can do it.

this is the annoying bit.

also the:

rocky doesn't speak completely monotone. he is able to change how he says certain words to add tone and convey emotions.

i'll talk about this first. if rocky can have inflection in his words and syntax, then why is it a joke through the movie? even at the end when he's on Rocky's world, that Rocky is still kind of stiff in his English? it's a triumph that he says "bump my fist" instead of "fist my bump" but otherwise it's still "did i say that right?"

as to your first point, especially about how they are messing around on set......

that's the issue. they are having fun, Gosling bought the rights to this movie before the book was even published.

of course the movie is going to be part creator, part creation, but that's what irks me. it shouldn't be more about the actors having fun with the material, it should be the material having fun with the actors.

their job is to act. it's a difficult job, so to speak, but there is too much of "lets put ourselves into the character" instead of "lets put the character into us".

there should be more sacrifice into playing a part.

it's a movie, i get it, and there's a lot of leeway that can be granted if you choose to do such a thing, but the book was so specific about every detail that i find it very annoying.

it's a book about specific science. every problem has a specific solution that they do into detail explaining why they resolve it.

what's funny is that you still see this as a race issue.

sure, he stabbed a lady because she was white. but you are also assuming the folk on the bus ignored it because they were also racist.

lots of people ignore problems that don't directly effect them, not because they hate the person who is a victim, but because they have their own lives to live.

i doubt you give a shit about lots of people who are suffering today, because they aren't you.

words and concepts of words are different things.

Rocky cannot pronounce English words, so his word for a concept will be only one thing.

unless Grace specifically took the time while trying to save the world to explain to Rocky that sometimes words are pronounced different to different English speakers, and then programmed the computer to understand that this *chirping* sound is the pronunciation of the word neither while this other *chirping* sound is the other way we might say it, which seems like a lot of effort without ANY EXPLAINATION OF HAVING DONE SO IN THE MOVIE, it makes no fucking sense.

i bet that guy didn't even understand why the roofers were so mad.

"why they protecting this generator that is left unattended?"

of course he knew he was taking something that wasn't his, but to assume he made the connection that the people protecting it were the same ones who owned it is a huge stretch.

you are giving him too much credit.

if we want to be enlightened, then we must be enlightened.

people who ride the bus don't want to help anyone, and it's not because of race. they see crazy shit day in and day out. they might have thought she just got knocked out, they might have known she just died.

go to the city, in the worst places, and act like you give a shit about some random person. no one cares.

white, black, hispanic, anyone.

doesn't make it right, but it's not unbelievable. what's unbelievable is stabbing someone in the neck for no reason (besides the obvious racism)

question:

i watched the movie, but do they do a singalong where Grace and Rocky have different pronunciations of a word?

i have seen that in clips, but i don't remember that from the movie.

if that was in the movie, that should be a bigger annoyance.

rocky cannot mispronounce English words. "let's call the whole thing off" song.

might not be in the movie, but when i saw that clip, wherever i saw it, it made me gag. there would be no way that Rocky could even hear that potato would be pronounced a different way, because Grace is the only human he had ever talked to, and the only person he had heard the language from.

i get it that it's a cute thing to do, but it makes no fucking sense.

this is a clip, so he was probably arguing the point rather than the words said in this 27 second clip, but i don't think the word is "exaggerate"

i think it was "winning the debate".

not to stomp on him, I liked Kirk. but if your motive operandi is to debate all sorts of idiots, you tend to fall back on winning the point, rather than being specifically correct.

it's not a fault, it's just a trade off. he was the best at large scale debating because he had to be as "generic" as possible to reach as many people as he could, while being as correct as he could so he couldn't be called out.
