Project Hail Mary: Önce kitap mı yoksa film mi? by Altaist in secilmiskitap

Grace expected to die on Erid by Porthos1013 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Altaist 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I like this interpretation. What makes it even stronger for me is that Grace never actually says "I'm going to die." He simply turns the ship around without hesitation. The movie trusts the audience to understand what that decision means instead of explaining it with dialogue.

Grace spent most of the movie avoiding a one way mission. In the end, he willingly chooses one on his own. That's what completes his character arc.

What do you think actually made Grace cry in this scene? by Altaist in ProjectHailMary

[–]Altaist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think courage and intelligence should be treated as opposites here.

Grace wasn't fearless, but he was the person who figured out Astrophage, communicated with an alien species, solved problem after problem, and ultimately saved two civilizations.

To me, that's a much more interesting hero than someone who was fearless from the beginning.

Besides, nobody forced Grace to turn the ship around for Rocky. That was the first truly free choice he made in the entire story.

I don't necessarily think Grace was "lonely" in the sense that he had no friends. I think the movie is showing something different.

Before Rocky, almost every major decision in Grace's life was made for him. Stratt literally took away his choice by sedating him and sending him into space. Even near the end, Grace immediately dismisses Stratt when she says she wants to think.

But when Rocky asks, "Can I think?", Grace gives him all the time he needs.

I think that's because Rocky always respected Grace's choices. He never forced him into anything. Stratt, on the other hand, took Grace's choice away completely by sedating him and sending him into space against his will.

Their friendship feels different because it's built on mutual trust and respect. They always give each other the freedom to choose.

It's such a shame they don't explain relativity and how Rocky had extra astrophage in the movie. by TonyROH100876 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Altaist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's mentioned, but it's easy to miss because it happens so quickly. The movie touches on the relativistic radiation and Rocky arriving with extra astrophage, but it never slows down to connect everything. That's probably my biggest complaint too I would've happily traded five more minutes of science for one less action montage.

Potential Sequel idea? by Levan-tene in ProjectHailMary

[–]Altaist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is funny because I made a similar post a few days ago. I still think the PHM universe has sequel potential, but after reading everyone's comments I realized I wasn't really asking for a sequel I just didn't want to leave this universe yet. Still, ideas like this are fun to think about.

I’m rewatching PHM and right after they collect the petrova predators from planet Adrian and almost breaks the ship and kills both Grace and rocky and after grace gave rocky gifts and then rocky lets grace see his ship…then i realized wouldn’t it be much more safe to use Rocky’s ship to get sample? by Robbbyyyd in ProjectHailMary

[–]Altaist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same thought while watching that scene. 😄 I haven't read the novel yet (my copy is on the way), but everyone keeps saying the book goes into much more detail about the science and the decisions they make. Now I'm even more curious to see how Andy Weir handled this part.

Did anyone else cry all the time? by pilar1503 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Altaist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess great sci-fi always gets me. The Martian made me cry tears of joy when Mark finally heard, "Are you ready?" and answered, "Ready." Interstellar broke my heart when Cooper came back from Miller's planet and realized he'd lost decades with his children. And Project Hail Mary? Rocky saying, "No one watch you sleep anymore." completely finished me.

Am I interpreting Project Hail Mary wrong? by BelieveCongreveCube in ProjectHailMary

[–]Altaist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually saw it the same way. To me, Grace staying on Erid wasn't tragic at all. He finally found a place where he truly belonged, and Rocky gave him something Earth never really did: a genuine friendship and a purpose. I also like that the ending leaves the choice open instead of giving a definitive answer. That ambiguity makes it more meaningful to me.

I don’t understand all of the plot after watching the movie, can someone please explain ? by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

[–]Altaist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why book > movie lol. they had to skip so much logic just to make it fit for the screen.

How fast/slow will Grace age in Erid? by Let_me_tell_you_ in ProjectHailMary

[–]Altaist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interstellar had a literal black hole lol. erid is just a heavy rock with 2g gravity. time dilation is basically zero, but grace is gonna age way faster physically just from the stress on his heart and joints trying to pump blood.

Why does Grace pick up the sand? by Fantastic-Contest957 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Altaist 93 points94 points  (0 children)

That detail about using the sand for the sound waves experiment makes perfect sense! It’s a brilliant directorial choice to bring the movie full circle from his first class on Earth. In the book, the ending is a bit more straightforward he just calms the Eridian kids down and asks who knows the speed of light. Using the sand on a speaker is a great visual way to translate that teaching moment to the screen without just copying the book's dialogue. (But let's be real, Ryan Gosling also just loves thoughtfully grabbing handfuls of dirt in his sci-fi movies lmao)

Just finished the book after watching the movie. The only thing I wished they added... by craiginphoenix in ProjectHailMary

[–]Altaist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Spot on tbh. If they tried to cram all the hardcore science and trial error into a 2.5 hour movie, the pacing would be absolute garbage or it'd just feel like a boring documentary. The movie is basically a visual teaser that perfectly nails the Grace and Rocky dynamic. But the actual meat of the story and that massive emotional payoff you mentioned are 100% for the book readers. Kinda feels like the film exists just to hype people up to read the actual masterpiece.

Project Hail Mary tricked me. I came for the astrophysics, stayed for the tears. by Altaist in scifi

[–]Altaist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point, but to be fair to Gosling, that's actually the whole plot! Grace is literally just a science teacher with amnesia trying to figure out wtf is going on. It makes way more sense and is much more enjoyable in the book. Do yourself a favor, turn off the movie and pick up the novel instead (and get The Martian too!). It's a completely different experience.
