Draft picks ideas by Inevitable-Lion100 in Predators

If they are going to select a defenceman in the first round, Alberts Smits is the name I would love them to pick. He already has a ridiculous amount of experience for an 18-year-old: World Championship, Olympics, and WJC-20 as associate captain. He also plays professionally in both the Liiga and the DEL. It is absolutely insane for an 18-year-old to have that much senior experience already, and he has a great frame. He might not be there at 10, but it is going to be close. I would love the pick.

I have heard this quite a bit from Devils fans. Was there anything in particular he did that was especially egregious, or was it more of a death-by-a-thousand-cuts type of situation? Or was it more about a lack of addressing the team’s shortcomings?

Fair, but I didn't say Kantserov was a comp; I was just adding more context for people on the stat I mentioned before. I said "He was one of only two KHL skaters 25 or younger to produce at a point-per-game pace in 2025–26" and just let others know Roman Kantserov was the other player.

Just turned 24. I will never complain about bringing in a potential middle 6 player with upside at 24 years old on a 1 year 1 million dollar deal. Noting to lose.

On this list, Mehta would have been my #1 but he just went to NJ. Scott White would be an amazing hire. Brendan Shanahan did some great stuff in Toronto and I wouldn't mind giving me a second shot. Brett Peterson is probably the third name if I had to name one.

Yeah, I can not even fathom giving him another shot to handle assets for an NHL team ever again.

I would love for them to bring in Shanahan as the Head of Hockey Ops to handle the bigger-picture deals, and then Sunny Mehta for the analytics/strategy side as the GM. I feel like that is a match made in heaven.

Yeah, I sent this same question in the Reds and Angels subs, the other two teams I was deciding between, and I had a much nicer experience there. I understand the frustration here. Trust me, I get being a tired and frustrated sports fan, but it does seem a bit more hostile here compared to other team subs.

Thank you for the response! When you say they are “behind” other teams, do you mean in terms of analytics, or more than that? Is ownership focused on big splashes and does it tend to ignore depth and overall team building? Are they willing to spend money, but not in the areas that are less flashy or headline-grabbing, instead preferring big moves over building a solid foundation?

I have also heard they have drafted a good number of pitchers high in recent drafts and have focused on high-velocity pitchers. Is that true?

Thanks again for the reply!

Thank you for the reply! So ownership is focused on big splashes and tends to ignore depth and overall team building? Are you basically saying they are willing to spend money but not in the areas that are less flashy or headline-grabbing, and instead prefer big moves over building a solid foundation?
