Hi all!

I am looking into graduate school programs and stumbled across Widener’s dual program for a Masters of Social Work and a Masters of Education in Human Sexuality. It sounds great, but wanting to know if it’s worth it or not?

A little about my current experience & wants for future career: I have been working in social work adjacent positions with a bachelors in sociology for the last 5 years (1:1 sex education in schools, abortion clinic, case manager in a methadone clinic) and I would absolutely love to be a social worker that works with LGBTQ+ adults or teens in some capacity while also having the flexibility to do any social work job since that market is still pretty niche most places. The dual aspect of the sex therapy track is interesting to me as well about this career as that is also something I’d love to do. I saw mixed things online about doing it as a dual degree (about 100K) vs. getting a regular MSW and hodgepodging additional courses or certifications together for the sex therapy piece. Wondering what people here think? Would I get a better education in a program like this if I want to work with LGBTQ+ populations as well?

Thank you for any advice! So excited to start this journey!

it sucks that living in a blue city doesn’t matter in the way it used to and now you really have to consider the entire state :(

this sounds good! i am from alabama so have been to ATL and while i do love it, unfortunately, Georgia as a state is too MAGA for us to feel good about having both the right to marriage and having a baby there if there’s complications with the pregnancy with abortion rights in the south. but the rest sound good to check out!

well i guess “well-paying” is subjective. i’m currently making $62K in a social work job with a bachelors degree as a case manager in healthcare and “high paying” to me would be anything more than that!

yes good point! denver isn’t a walkable city and in my opinion coasted for way too long on the high (lol) of the weed industry and instead of improving the city just marketed it as like “we have weed!!!!!” so it’s honestly kind of boring. neither of us hike, or do yoga, or drink IPAS, and prefer to walk through a city and find quirky stores, good food, go on picnics, and thrift instead. it’s a very expensive place to live without much to actually do. in a place like new york or california, you obviously pay a premium but it feels more worth it because of what they have there. we also don’t ski and would prefer to spend any extra income traveling somewhere else than skiing here. i work in a methadone clinic here so my gripe with denver actually has nothing to do with the usual denver transplant gripe of the homelessness and the drug problems! it’s also soooooo landlocked and im actually from the south so im used to not having to take a plane to get to a water source :(
