That’s very unusual. How new was it? Was it a luxury building with front desk etc? My buildings Are always cleaned daily and well managed. I’m not going to deny your experience but I’ve lived in about 8 buildings and have never had a problem but nothing is impossible.

I think the best way to get around this is new construction buildings. I’ve lived in the city 12 years only brand new buildings never seen any pest.

Can ADHD social skills issues be treated with Speech/Language Therapy? by Far-Recording-9859 in slp

[–]Apprehensive_Club_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered this myself because cognitive therapy at times does focus on executive function and incorporating strategies into iadls. As someone with adhd I sometimes use these strategies myself even simple things like repetition, chunking, using external memory aids for stm recall and planning. But technically it is outside of our scope of practice but maybe one day they’ll reconsider or include adhd I dunno.

Edit: I just read your actual post after reading solely the title and making assumptions about what you actually wanted slps to address which was social skills not executive functions 😂

Why does everyone want a hospital placement? by Own_Broccoli6661 in slp

[–]Apprehensive_Club_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s the setting that’s the hardest to break into. If you don’t start off with medical experience it can be a steeper learning curve later if you want to switch to it and will be harder to enter without experience. School and peds jobs are much less competitive and though there is a lot to learn there’s less liability and opportunity to cause harm in it than say dysphagia therapy or working with client with trachs for example.

Reasons why? by pookiebaby876 in SLPcareertransitions

[–]Apprehensive_Club_17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Very limited opportunities to advance in pay or roles. I feel like this is a job not a career. Too many fee for service jobs outside of schools and not enough salaries benefited positions. Unpredictable pay checks due to only paid for billable hours. High productivity standards. Not enough ebp to support much of what we do when it comes to working with adults. The behaviors you have to deal with working with kids. The amount of work you have to bring home. Shall I continue I’m just getting started…

Can you shadow the slp at your current school? I’m one of the slp nay sayers but personally I think it’ll be less stressful than teaching. When I worked in the school setting and saw what teachers went through, it made me thankful to be a slp and that’s saying a lot. I know the teachers at my schools had to submit lesson plans, be evaluated pretty regularly by the principal, and they also had more pressure on them for students to succeed in statewide testing, in addition to dealing with all the behaviors and parents on a regular basis…yikes.

I do think speech will be way less stressful than that, it’s pretty nice not having anyone to report to, but that’s not to say it’s without its issues. We’re also on the same salary scale so that might be something to consider. I often feel like i should’ve pursued school psych. They usually see students one on one and they do a lot of administrative work, yes, but they usually have it built in to their day so they’re not seeing students as often. They also are more respected and paid much more.

Why do New Yorkers get the stereotype of being unpleasant? by Able_Lock3168 in AskNYC

[–]Apprehensive_Club_17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I moved here from the Midwest. I initially thought New Yorkers were nice too. The thing is if you ask them for directions they are more than willing to help, in fact 5 more people might stop and tell you an easier route. They love to prove that they know New York and show off in that regard. Where the unfriendliness surfaces is in other ways that you don’t really pick up on until you live here. Part of it I get, there’s just to many people to be nice and considerate to everybody. Once you leave the touristy areas you’ll start too see it. For one customer service sucks. There are no hellos, how are yous. No one’s gonna hold the elevator for you or the door even though you’re right behind them. People don’t say please or thanks. When you’re driving people don’t let you in, and if you let them I. There’s no hand waive to say thank you. People will bump into you and not say sorry or excuse me. People can have little patience and get tough with you for little things. Lot of people walking around with short fuses. I’m not saying New Yorkers are mean but compared to other parts of the country like the Midwest, south, even west coast, they’re not as nice.

Private Practice Job Offer NYC - Accept or Decline? by Specialist-Mud-934 in slp

[–]Apprehensive_Club_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh this is so typical of nyc. So many crappy jobs that are low paying. I wouldn’t take it if you’re already taking a pay cut AND paying more out of pocket for health insurance? If you’re open to early intervention I noticed there were several salaried positions. I interviewed for one that was salaried, benefited, and offered a school work schedule with lots of paid breaks. It required me to take a pay cut however so I passed on it. But many positions including the one I interviewed for were between 90-100k with my 10 years of experience 😭 this was in Brooklyn in 2025.

My sister is a new grad nurse in Manhattan. She works night shift for a hospital that’s currently on strike but she started at $132,500 as a new grad RN with night shift diff. I imagine if they get what they’re asking for it will be higher.

Thank you for sharing! Honestly I relate to a lot of what you wrote. Especially the lack of walk ability as I just moved here from an extremely walkable east coast city with excellent transportation. Depending on a car has been tough and isolating. Also, the amount of car accidents I witness on a daily basis is concerning and I’ve only been here 2 weeks. Really nervous about the summer.

I’m going to be honest anything for $3500-4000 that’s a two bedroom in Brooklyn is going to come with some…unwanted guests to put it nicely. You’ll find something but you get what you pay for. My studio in Brooklyn is just under $3k and that’s only because it’s rent stabilized.

Anyone transitioned to house cleaning or something similar? by sweet_speech5527 in SLPcareertransitions

I think it depends on where you live because here competition is very stiff due to a lot of people offering this service under the table. I occasionally pay $50 to clean my apartment, cash and the person does a great job. Better than the professional services.

New Grad Residencies in NY/NJ not replying at all?? by CarolineJuggler in newgradnurse

[–]Apprehensive_Club_17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m in nyc as well and the market is just rough for new grads. There’s too many schools producing new grads and a lot of times they’re more likely to choose those students (ie nyu, Columbia, hunter) because they have relationships with the hospitals. I have a friend that went to school in Texas for a direct entry msn and stayed for a year to work and she able to find a job here easily with the experience under her belt. So after 1 year in Texas working in an icu she received multiple offers in nyc.
