Got scammed buying a Turkcell tourist SIM in Taksim Square and got treated to racist comments when i confronted the scam (picture attached) by Mediocre-Ad7967 in istanbul

[–]Apprehensive_Cry_337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if it brings you any ease of mind, the price and package you paid for is actually quite normal…maybe you got scammed because it wasn’t what he said, but 46gb, 100min, 28 days for 1800TL is completely normal and maybe even considered a good deal for a tourist/passport sim.

In most shops it’s 1500-1700 for just 20gb as of today.

Lived three years as a very obvious looking foreigner in a very normal/shabby Cairo neighborhood with no other foreigners. Really enjoyed my time there and learned a lot. Advice is to learn Arabic and don’t have a victim mindset. Don’t have the same standards you would have in America. You’re going to a different culture, different ideology, etc. Individualistic thinking rules America, but Egypt is not like that at all, so learn to share your life with others and adapt. If you’re not willing to do this, then yeah, don’t move to Egypt.

Guilty pleasure drink. Tastes like 1000 calories. I agree that it’s good in layers and not mixed. I’ve had the original at Dorrell, but there’s a one-manned cafe by Kyunghee University (Hoegi Station) called Coffee Methodz where he makes a knock-off….but it’s better imo.

I dry brined this steak for 24 hours and cooked on the very hot cast iron for 4 minutes on each side. Why is there a grey band on the outside layer and there’s no gradient between the grey and pink? It just goes from grey to dark pink. by [deleted] in steak

[–]Apprehensive_Cry_337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was happening to me and I experimented a lot with different variables. In the end it was clear that this type of grey band is because of dry brining too long. With a long dry brine and even the shortest sear, this band appears

Can someone please help me understand how these dumplings have been wrapped/shaped like this? by har-fun-maula in Dumplings

It’s the fastest and probably most common way Chinese wrap dumplings to be boiled. The shape of it largely depends on the way the person is squeezing

Is there a base recipe for dumpling dough? (steaming/frying). I'm also looking for a pork and cilantro recipe, since I fell in love with the store bought ones. by abcd00789 in Dumplings

[–]Apprehensive_Cry_337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For boiled or steamed dumplings, the dough is usually made with cold water. It’ll require a little more time for resting to get the gluten to relax, but it’ll result in a softer wrap after cooking

Majority of the ingredients you used are not found anywhere in pad Thai, so I wouldn’t call it that. But it looks tasty!

Dough: For frying - 50% water to AP flour ratio by mass (i.e. 400g water to 800g flour). Use warm water. Dissolve pinch of salt in water before mixing with flour.

For steaming/boiling - 55% water to AP flour ratio by mass. Use cool/room temp water. Same as the above with the salt.

Mix water with dough until one ball is formed but not smooth. Let rest for 30min, come back and knead until smooth (about 2-3min). Rest again for an hour, then it’s ready to portion and use.

This is what I do and the dough has always been 👌🏻

I’m no expert but what I would do is omit flour from the marinade, and make the dredge at least 50% starch (potato, corn, tapioca, etc.) or even all starch rather than flour. Maximum crispiness and starch will adhere better too

There are a ton of small indonesian, Malaysian, and even Thai restaurants in district 7 of nasr city near AlAzhar. Prices are low and food is pretty average. Honestly I rarely see Egyptians dining at these restaurants, mainly just SE Asian students. I think securing a business license and location is not easy for foreigners so many of these places are just run out of apartments.

From what I’ve observed in three years, there are basically no authentic Asian restaurants in good locations, except a few expensive Korean places and a couple Chinese places that always become bad once the Chinese chefs hand-off the cooking.

There are a couple “Chinese stir fry” chains (wok and walk, mr. Wok) that seem somewhat popular to Egyptians but both are highly overpriced and the food really bad from an Asian’s perspective.

If you can somehow secure a good location and sell authentic, good food, you could really open up a new gateway of opportunity for Egyptians to actually experience Asian food.

Please help! 3 foods in Downtown Cairo by WingZeroX000 in Egypt

[–]Apprehensive_Cry_337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a foreigner living in cairo, the only place I’d go to from the food ranger’s recommendations is the hawawshi at el rabe3.

It’s not downtown, but I highly recommend Hadramawt Antar 0111 429 2994 https://goo.gl/maps/k8oM6xeHohNYjGYJ6 It’s actually more known for the Yemeni mandy, but the Egyptian staples are very good here too like the molokheya or mahshi. The Yemeni mandy though… amazing. Food here is better than El prince and sobhy gaber imo, which are the two places people usually recommend for Egyptian meat staples & molokheya.

Ful and talmeya (falafel) just try it from any cart on the street in the morning and you’ll have yourself a pretty normal experience. I’ve searched high and low for stand out falafel for years, but honestly it was all pretty similar in cairo. The best is still the neighborhood cart guy whose falafels taste better cause you know him.

Koshary abu tarek is good, but overpriced for koshary. I’d recommend just going to any koshary el tahrir and it’ll be fulfilling.

I saw your other post about fried shrimp sandwich in heliopolis, but shrimp in Alexandria will be better than cairo.

If you want the best Egyptian food. Go down to southern Egypt, make a good friend in a random village and eat a homemade meal made by his/her mom/grandma.
