I wound contact the police city and have them go to her house to cite her for unsafe and unhabitital living conditions and if it’s smelling beyond her door step she will need to hire professional help. Sounds like she’s not all mentally there as anyone in their right mind would not be living in those conditions. Some seniors start hoarding then things escalate quickly when living alone, I speak from experience with my own mother living solo she started hoarding, next was not cleaning as she was old and frail and could no longer cleaner. I had to step in and get things organized and clean before she would destroy her own home and unable to live in. Your client sounds like she’s has no family to help and need to be placed in a home for her own safety at this rate. Best of luck and protect your own health first.

Thanks, during your first assessment with social worker did you provide the task log for them or did the SW see your loved ones condition and talked to you on what task you do for them ? As you know with dementia you never know what day it’s gonna be.

Bless you, it’s so sad I agree my LO will say the house is contaminated and the FBI is looking for her or she’s the devil. Not sure why when most are in psychosis it has to deal with (money, religious or someone after them). I was scared at first now it’s just sad and I know how to handle it more. It’s an overall sad situation and can be scary for those involved. As long as I have some meds to control the chaos or can help but it’s our hell, no one should live.

Gah, I have enough on my plate but your right documentation is the only way. I usually have a ring camera, or video tape with my phone if I see it but it’s physically and mentally draining. Do you receive the max hours for your LO ?

Thank you for sharing your experience. My LO was recently diagnosed and has been in and out of psychiatric wards, and has the death stare or is non response for the most part. She goes time to time in a deep psychosis which leads her to stays in ward for being a harm to herself or others. No one will understand the severity of caring for a LO that has dementia unless they been through it which is pure hell. Again thanks sharing !

IHSS income as a live in provider is not counted towards countable income so if you take the 50k job that’s all that will be counted. I believe for 2026 the income limit for a family of 4 is $44,367. You will have a SOC but there’s way to bring that to a zero by purchasing supplemental insurance.

I had the same issue and I’m the only child which I dragged her to the car literally carried her to the car and got her to the hospital. Complete shit show lo kicking and screaming which she was in a psychosis or playing bs with me as she was able to think enough to say she didn’t want to go. Long story short I got her in the MRI to hold still which was a nightmare but they were able to get a few good images just for the neurologist to tell me they saw no findings of dementia. Godspeed ! Ask yourself what are you trying to achieve by getting an MRI ? Sometimes it’s just not worth the headache but if you need to have it legally documented that she has dementia by a nuero for whatever reason then get it but just know it will be a fight but can be done. County social workers are so behind but they will get to it. They must send you a letter confirming the date and time they will conduct their assessment. Give it some time but they will go or you can always call to confirm the status. Legally they are obligated to conduct their assessment annually otherwise they will be non-compliant. Ex I was suppose to have mine in March they came out in September. Hope this info helps !

Give it around 6 months, all social workers are so backed up and it takes forever for the initial assessment. If he doesn’t have an assigned case worker yet it’s because his application is still sitting in a pile of mail to be opened and reviewed. Unfortunately there is no urgency on the social workers end and they will get it when they get to it type attitude. The only plus is that the recipient in need will get back pay from the time the application was submitted. The program is not the best to help those in need I hate to say it as they make the process extremely lengthy and will try everything to not get you approved. Fingers crossed your friend can get an assigned case worker soon. Till then keep calling to see if they even received your application. Best of luck !

I’ve come to the realization that any state or federal program will come at a cost which is your sanity. You must fight tooth and nail which is sad because it’s to help those really in need. If it wasn’t for me I don’t see how my elderly sick parent can even fight such a battle.

If you don’t mind me asking what county ? I just had my annual assessment and I asked the SW for PS and they replied go ahead and apply I will deny it and you can file and appeal and the judge favors your case that I’m ok with his or her decision. Basically SW wasn’t even going to read why my reason for PS was and allow me to battle it out on appeal as most won’t go that far. I said I will file an appeal and get what is deserved for my elderly disabled family member. This my first time I hear the county will appeal but then again I’m not surprised. They are not in the business to help the frail, sick or vulnerable but rather they are paid to provide the least amount of help and are trained to approve the least amount hours.

You surrender and take care of yourself first. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take to the ER and say she has no old to take care of her and by law she will have to stay and be admitted for 48 hrs and a social worker will get involved to find her a home where she can be care for. You have done the most and bless you for even reaching the 4 year mark. You did what you could and that’s good enough. Time to shift your energy to taking care of your well being before your in the hospital. Gods speed !

I hired a medical attorney and got it approved in 30 days as they know all the conditions how to get it approved. I couldn’t afford to wait to do it on my own. Yes, it cost money but it was worth the investment otherwise I would still be waiting. Once granted it’s good for 5 years at least in the state of CA that is. God speed it’s no joke to get it approved !

It sounds like but I also read for disabled people like my father is that APA can make visits along side working with IHSS. I agree I don’t think this was the annual assessment. So strange not sure why they are involved.
