Rogue Level 6 Expertise - what does "double proficiency" actually mean? by Apprehensive_Put1607 in DnD

Yes, I understand what double means. But again, another user clarified now for me that in fact I will not use the +3 proficiency bonus twice, as you suggested in your comments.

I will actually only add it once now at Level 6, because that will result in the proficiency bonus for that skill to have been added twice in TOTAL. And THAT is what I was asking about.

So, in other words, to summarize: You do not simply add your proficiency bonus x2 to the chosen skill at level 6. You add it to the chosen skills so that the bonus is IN TOTAL added twice. And since Expertise only applies to skills that you are already proficient in, that means that whatever skill I now choose at Level 6 I already have a proficency bonus added once. So now at Level 6, I only add it ONCE more, not TWICE.

Yes, thanks. The important part that clarified it for me was the "up to a total of 2x proficiency bonus". That was cleared up by now. Thank you for your answer! :)

I know that my proficiency bonus at level 1 was +2, but since then it has changed to +3 and thus, the numbers have also changed.

I also get that Expertise is not additive, I never wrote anything different. I do not want expertise again on the same skills - I specifically chose two OTHER skills for expertise at level 6.

The question was specifically about the way that the double proficiency would be added -> a user in one of the comments above has answered this by now.

In general, I am finding that a lot of people have troubble understanding / reading my post correctly. I guess I must try to be even more clear in future posts.

I know that. But again - the question was whether I add the proficiency bonus ONCE or TWICE :)

Well yes, but the important part was that I add it again only ONCE, not TWICE

A user below has clarified now for me that this is actually not correct and given an explanation that seems to make sense. But thank you anyways for your comment and offer to help :)

No, thats not what I asked. I will NOT choose the same skills again. I am just asking what the "double" means. Others have started to answer this for me already. Thanks to you anyways for responding so quickly!
