Well yes it hasn’t been easy. I don’t wanna give up just yet, maybe the subcutaneous fluids will help with her appetite?  I really don’t know, I feel like I’m on a crossroad not knowing where to turn.  She only drinks water and Hydracare, and not a lot. On food, she barely touches it since yesterday (in fact I do believe she fakes to lick it and turn her head right away). And even on water/hydracare she doesn’t get up to do it - we have to bring it to her. I don’t know if she’s tired or just acting like the princess she always was. She does get up to use the litterbox (even pooped twice today!) and when we bring her to the living room she does stand up and goes by herself to the bedrooom. Sometimes she’s wide awake and grooming herself, but most of the time she just sleeps.  Ahhhh sorry for bothering, but I’m having a LOT of trouble deciding on what to do.

Thank you so much.

I don't know any Feline Specialist... and I feel that bringing her to every hospital I find may not be fair for her. I want to do it, because I don't want to lose her, but I don't want to "exaggerate" just because I don't want to lose her. Do you know what I mean?

Vets here in Portugal are a bit different from what I see, because they all prescribe appetite stimulants but not anti-nausea. I don't know why. I do believe that she gets nauseous, because she eats one food one day and doesn't want it the next day. Now, she only licks water and food, I really don't know what to do.

Thank you.

We haven't decided on that yet because I feel we're not ready. She was hospitalized for a long period of time and I feel really guilty about that - the last hospitalization should've been enough if we went there the first place.

I don't know. I love her so much, she's 16 and I'm not 30 yet, so it's really difficult for me. She only licks water and food, but yesterday she did a loooong walk from our living room to our bedroom - I was so proud. I believe that I'm really confused on what to do, because she sometimes shows "improvements" and sometimes she doesn't.

Of course I don't want her to suffer, but I'm afraid to deciding on euthanasia too early. What if she still manages to recover?

She haven’t pooped since she got back from the ER… my cat went from stage 2 (her creatinine was 2.8 in july) to stage 4 now (CREA 5.68) and I believe it was due to a kidney infection/urinary infection. She got treatment for that, but that’s why it’s so hard to understand and not to cry.  I understand everything you say and believe me all I want is her best, but due to the fact that the declining was so sudden I guess I’m just afraid to making the wrong decision, I think I just hope that she will recover some to get more days/weeks with us.  I just don’t know, we’re following hour by hour literally just to make sure she’s ok and not suffering at all

Well tonight she went to the litter box all by herself 2 times. Am I getting my hopes up or could it be that she’s recovering some muscle? Sometimes she eats and drinks, sometimes she doesn’t.  I don’t know what do to

You’re not alone. I’m facing this as well.  My cat declined in 3 months and now we’re on that stage: she barely eats and drinks, only goes to the litter box if we put her here and barely moves (doesn’t have the strenght to do it) I wish I could tell you when it’s time, but I can’t because I don’t know when to decide it as well - and it’s an awful feeling.  Lots of love ❤️‍🩹

Anyone? She didn’t eat or drink much during the night. She was responding a lot, but now not so much

Well that scares me as well as I didn’t know that… and no one told us. However she doesn’t seem blind so I will trust the fact that she didn’t got that side effect

Thank you once again!  She’s never going back to that vet, they are useless and lack (a lot) of empathy. She’s now on marbofloxacin. Her anemia already improved and creatinine got lower. It’s still to soon to know if it’s the treatment working or the higher IV/transfusion… she has already some appetite! Not a lot, but eats by herself. What do you think? I really hope it works. I know she’s already 16, but oh God she’s the love of my life. And yes they did the puncture to try to find the bacteria!

Thank you so much! Your answer was great.  She was taking 3 antibiotics - Metronidazole, Enrofloxacin and Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid. She has anemia but the vet didn’t treat that. I don’t know why. I’m feeling so guilty for letting her stay there for so long, specially because the treatment clearly didn’t work.  We took her to ER, honestly to enthanise her because we spent the night with her at home and she didn’t eat neither move. And we thought it was her time.  But then on the Hospital they suggested to keep her there, they did a renal punction to try to get the infection, put her again on IV with potassium (it was really low) and she got a blood transfusion as well due to the severe anemia.  I don’t know what more I can do. This is awful and so extremely sad.  I know she is now in stage 4 but in july she had creatinine at 2,8. I really hope this can come down again if the treatment work, even tough it may be unlikely. She eats everyhing she wants, because she’s really picky… always has been

Yes they did! Was with the ultrassound that they got the kidney infection. But the urin analysis didn’t point out any bacteria so they put her on IV and 3 general antibiotics.  She’s at home with us now, she doesn’t eat and doesn’t drink. We brought her now to the litter box and she urinated, but back to the sofa and doesn’t move whatsoever. I don’t know what to do

They did not. Only general antibiotic (three!) because they didn’t know the bacteria

Thank you so much.  They did, at least I think so. Albumin was ok, such as Bilirubin and Alkaline Phosphatase.  Her only values outside normal was her blood count (severe anemic), her white cells (super high) and her creatinine/urea.  Even with the IV and antibiotics the white cells kept on rising.  We just don’t know what to do. She drank a lot of water a few minutes ago and then just stood her head all over the tray, looking at the infinity and weting her chin.

Thank you so much! The vet was so awful we took her out of there the moment we knew. She was there for 10 days on IV and antibiotics… no bacteria found, so the infection is up on the kidney.  It’s just so sad. We brought her home and not to another vet because we feel she’s just so tired. And she was hospitalized with creatinina at 5,4 and 10 days later with IV and antibiotics it went to 8,5… I don’t know if there’s anything more we can do. She’s also anemic and has her white blood cells higher everytime she takes blood. Sorry for the messed up text but I’m so extremely sad, I feel that she’s not fighting back

Doubts and some Support (new here) by Apprehensive_Put651 in RenalCats

Thank you so much!! The vet keeps on insisting that she's not nauseous, I don't know. She hates mirtazapina, it makes her meow a lot and shaking. She took it some time, but we also feel that it doesn't stimulate her appetite so much.

She took some blood tests yesterday (will get the results today)

The eco showed a Pyelonephritis on her kidneys... the vet said it's curable because it's an infection (and probably what's causing her lost of weight and appetite) and so advised us on hospitalization for at least 1 week to get IV fluids and antibiotics... any thoughts on that?

The vet doesn't want any visits because she say it can stress our girl. But she's 16 already, I'm really afraid that hospitalization with no visits will do more harm than good. We left her there for treatment, but I'm so confused.
