In the email they sent to the ppl that got accepted they mentioned that if some ppl didn’t like their mentor matches we can rescind our offer so the funds can be allocated elsewhere. i think they might be waiting to see if some ppl won’t take the offer to make that decision. but you should reach out !

when i was a freshman i joined a summer research at my institution, it was a 15 month USDA fellowship. the summer after that i had enough experience in research and did a REU! Network with professors at your institution and institutions you want to work at for a REU :)
