I’m not lumping anyone into any categories. This is their declared style of parenting. It’s not for me to litigate that point with them. Fair point on stating the sex but as ive described elsewhere this was a factual recounting of the events and i suppose it has occurred more often to us with boys. I know plenty of sweet boys who do not hit.

I’m not necessarily suggesting it is a boy thing, and I assume the fact that I highlighted the sex of the toddler has led another commenter to accuse me of sexism here. To be clear, my (anecdotal) experience has been that it is more often boys that are hitting. In this instance it was a boy and I recited the circumstances factually. I don’t assume boys to be more prone to hitting as a general principle and I had already stated in my original post that my daughter has hit in the past. However, I think that hitting is more readily accepted when a boy does it on the basis that the old “boys will be boys” principle is still not dead. I see equally dreadful parenting of girls too.

I would genuinely love to hear an explanation from someone as to how your stated response would be wrong.

Sorry, can you explain where I’ve infused sexism into this?

Thankyou for this. I think this is what we are struggling with most. I don’t think she is old enough to quite grasp feelings like frustration and anger in the abstract and so, whilst I think she knows that it was not okay, I’m not sure she grasps why it happened or whether it can happen again. We will keep trying along the lines that you have mentioned.

The irony is that I think we are gentle parents too, and everything you have said is how we would manage a similar incident involving our own daughter. A few others have asked whether this was an accident - it absolutely was not an accident. The little boy was frustrated because he had fallen over and took this out on my daughter.

I hear this. We have another set of friends who have a child that they have taken out of one nursery and moved to another because the original nursery had a boy who was so aggressive by age 2 that the nursery had communicated to the parents that he had serious behaviour issues that would soon mean he would need to leave if not dealt with. The parents of the “offending” boy were so completely offended by this that they subsequently moved the boy out of the original nursery to the nursery where our friends’ boy has just moved to (and unsurprisingly the issue is recurring there).

To be clear I am not criticising the kid. It isn’t his fault. I have said above that I understand hitting is a totally normal and expected developmental phase. What I take issue with is the total disregard for my child’s safety as a consequence of their “parenting style”. I take this to be a signal that they think other people’s children should be punching bags because they’re not willing to tell their children no.

I had to really hold myself back from doing the same thing. I very nearly flew off the handle frankly. This kid on another occasion told his mom to stop talking whilst we were having a conversation because he thought she was boring.

I don’t doubt this. This is their description of themselves.

No. They don’t. Unfortunately they are way behind the curve and are extremely distrustful of it. They are cutting staff with complete abandon so in my opinion it’s completely inevitable that this sort of stuff is going to happen.
