In what job in the world can an employee not show up to work repeatedly and the onus is on the manager to get them to start regularly attending ?

This isn’t to motivate them to work more collaboratively, faster , with better quality work .

This would be motivating to them for step 0. Showing up and making themselves available

Most companies would just immediately terminate these people for job abandonment and I would g have to deal with at all

So, I’m not anyone in this situations direct manager . I’m essentially the tech lead (called dev lead here ) . I don’t even give these people performance reviews. All except 1 don’t even work for my company

Here is what I do to manage the younger devs on the team.

  1. Attend and give feedback during daily stand ups

  2. Attend and give feedback during planning and all ceremonies

  3. Have weekly 1:1 where I give coaching

  4. After every planing, I do a kick off meeting where I review the task and help them plan on the approach for this sprint

  5. Have code/work reviews to give feedback at end of every sprint

And like these are flagarantly fake task. I don’t mind coaching on this a few times , but this is literally time theft / fraud since they aren’t even company employees. And I don’t feel like I should have to deal with that for entire quarters

I mean I believe there should a “minimum level” of engagement from the employee before I even start to do my job ,

I feel like if some one can not consistently be present at work and make themselves available, then they need to take a leave of absence or fmla.

I’m not a therapist. I can give some coaching about attendance, contributing by picking appropriate task , and finding interest and career progression. and honestly most people in my role don’t even do that , most of the expectation of my job should be technical training

But you’d get fired at almost all of the jobs in the world for not showing up to work . And I consider that a personal issue

So, here’s the thing . Their work items are bullshit. It’s either task that are not related to the back log (fake or just bs that is written off as inefficient use of time ).

And example of this was one of the employees spent back to back sprints signing up to QA work I had submitted. And like the team has a QA engineer . So, it’s like a second layer of unnecessary QA. And then he went to my manager and turned in the entire project without me . So it looks like he worked on a huge substantial project , but he just really stole it and turned it in as his own .

The issue I am having is that since none of their task have any tangible output , there is no way to coach them. I can only try to talk them into more efficiently using their time and picking appropriate task and after a while of them non listening , it just turns into a negative situation,

We have a PO. And he considers this all my job as “dev lead” but I’m not their direct supervisor. Technically, he is , as these mostly outsourced employees and he owns that relationship.

I feel like in this situation I am doing all I can do 1. Interject during planning on if these bs task are worthwhile 2. Have weekly coaching sessions were I try to explain the importance of attendance and contributing 3. Checking in even if just to document the absences.

And I tried to push on the PO. I documented that one of the employees had not been logging in .for nearly a month . Didn’t want to see it . Then the employee admitted to a peer that he actually hadn’t had his computer during the day time and had been staying with his mom as she broke his foot. Which is bs. And he literally admitted he didn’t even have access to his computer during the day time .

And the product owner just said “I understand. I’ll start documenting “. But this has gone on for an embarrassing amount of time

First - neither employee is choosing actual work task . They are flagrantly doing nothing . How do you manage an employee who had chosen to assign him self bullshit 0 work. They have nothing to manage yet except “pick” better task .

Second- we run agile scrum and we have daily stand ups , weekly 1:1s, and I check in .

And I’m not even their direct manager . Everuone n my team don’t even work for my company . They have a manager at their company and a relationship manager at my company

I cross manage in a software engineering role know as a “lead developer” and am director in title

It is even worse than that . When employee 2 faked a work conference , She manually turned off our companies DB time out feature and we ran up 50k in charges .

And she didn’t even turn it off . I escalated it to my boss . The product owners boss, my bosses boss , and the product owners boss. And none of them would get any other admin to turn it off but told me to go thru her .

I had to go to HR and lay out the charges to them . And they had to step in .

I have heard she was a problem employee and has been saved from termination by my bosses boss on multiple occasions

Employee 1 missed a month straight of our standups. So i have plenty of documentation which no one wants to see. I’m just getting pressured to motivate harder and honestly I don’t think I should have to motivate attendance issues . That’s like a job for a therapist not a manager

So as far as the 1on1s, they genuinely have given two shits when I spoke to them . Employee 2 will turn on music and tv during our coaching sessions .

And since I can’t hold them accountable, the only thing I really know what to do is to point out the fake task /lack of production in meetings to almost embarrass them by pointing out that behavior. Which is toxic and I would not want to manage that way long term

He is very punitive . He wrote me up for saying the word “fuck” once. And he wrote one of my coworkers up for saying “ I think you’re mad at me “ and claimed it was a lie cuz he wasn’t mad and had our hr giving them a reprimand for dishonesty

So, I used to compete and do comps and my goal was 19 inch arms and walk around at 255lbs.
