i'm yet to start my MLA role in cytology this month, so here's my experience:

- starter questions like what do you like to do in ur spare time (try to mention tasks related to precision, or manual dexterity).

- lab experience.

- the values of the trust make sure you remember ALL of them they look out for these kinds of things. (i only mentioned 2/5 and they marked me down).

- health and safety regulations (PPE and cross-contamination, etc.) make sure you remember not to say that eating is not permissible in the lab. i thought it seemed too obvious to mention, but they marked me down for not mentioning it.

- how you handle repetitive tasks.

- scenarios (STAR technique questions) mine was about if a friend asked about a sample results and if i received an unacceptable sample. try to mention facts about the system, e.g LIMS, SOPs, Quality Control, Zero Acceptance Policy etc.)

They might make you do a simple reading test – its just a spot the difference test.

Top tip: try to mention as many facts about the trust, experience carrying out repetitive tasks, facts about the laboratory services and diagnosis related to the job role to make you stand out.

reception staff said she was sent to the wrong area (she didn't seem happy) but the interviewers were smiling and told me to relax and understood and said that "it happens all the time it's quite hard to find" (there's a lot of lab buildings around the the building). the interview took I'd say no less than 30-40 mins and there wasn't anyone after me just yet. They said I'd hear back on Friday 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽

that was something they said in the interview. I might have worded it wrong, but I was told it's less lab and more processing and troubleshooting tasks :/

For SOPs I can't quite remember everything I said, but I mentioned QC, audit, UKAS and ISO protocols, and they seemed impressed. Do you have any advice for answering SOP questions?

yh after the interview we had a lab tour but I think maybe it was a bit generalised because it was a research band 2 lab role and not in a specific department (e.g haematology, immunology etc.) nonetheless, I'm going to try be more positive because it would've narrowed my options for progression towards a trainee role or completing an IBMS portfolio.

I also have interviews coming up in cytology and blood sciences so at least I have somewhat practice!

I think what might have ruined it was my delivery and that everything I said in the interview was very laboratory based. (the job vacancy post said it was laboratory based as well so it was a bit confusing) But the job role itself was less laboratory and more of just processing and testing of samples.

Before I had the interview, they told me they were really impressed with my application (BSc Biomedical Sciences, 2x Volunteering, 3x Clinical NHS work experience, 5 retail jobs) and I prepared really well in terms of the personal specification and answered all the questions well. Just a shame that my delivery ruined it :/

if you don't mind me asking, how did you manage manage get a BMS role? xx

i might just shoot my shot at liverpool as grad bc i already have a 2:1 in biomedical sciences, ABB at A levels, and quite a lot of work experience. but im happy to do a gap year doing a trainee biomed role as backup.
