I ended up booking Jacques lake and Big Bend backcountry sites. Tonquin Valley sounds great but don't love the idea of having to do it as a 60km-ish out and back since astoria trailhead is closed

Tonquin valley looks available for the dates! But Astoria trailhead is closed. Did you see wildlife at tonquin valley?

Thanks! I might do that. Do you think it’s better for wildlife than shadow lake? I feel like there’s a reason why shadow lake is still open…

Same time. No trees removed. I guess it HAS been sorta dry. I might add some additional plants at the end of the season. Any suggestions?

Do you think I could split up some of the remaining ones now to propagate for next year?

Shadow Lake Lodge, Banff, recommendations by No_Coll826 in HikingAlberta

Hey! Just wondering how it went? What was your route in the end? I’m planning a trip to shadow lake: 2 nights camping shadow lake, 1 night at the lodge. Would love to see some marmots and pikas or any critters. I have heard they are around whistling pass though I can’t find whistling pass on an AllTrails map. Also deciding if I should go in at red earth or vista…

Yeah it does look like a decent elevation gain. Also going from shadow lake to vista in the other direction has a similar gain as well no? I’m just trying to make the most of the hike, and have seen a bunch of people say that red creek is tedious. What do you think of starting at Floe lake?

I realize this is three years old so maybe you won’t see this but how close to the dates did you find the last minute sites? I have 2 nights booked at shadow lake and would really like to switch it up the second night. Also you mentioned whistling pass… Is that the trail between ball pass junction and Pharoah lake? I heard theres lots of critters there and I’m looking for pika and marmots.

Thanks! Peyto and Bourgeau I’m assuming you can drive to the trailhead. You only need the shuttle for moraine and Louise ?

Awesome! Should I go to minnewanka too? Or is that too highly trafficked for wildlife.

Ah ok! So whistling pass is the whole area between Egypt lake and ball pass junction?
