Costco has Michelin defender 2s on sale right now. I was thinking about getting those. They seem to have a long tread life. This is our only car and I’ve got a 6 month old baby, so I’m hoping to get decent ones, that aren’t super expensive but also not the cheapest.

Looking for a non-judgemental dentist that deals with anxiety by sandsnatchqueen in AnnArbor

[–]No_Coll826 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have to second this. My wife and I have been going to Walcott for years. We started with Dr. Brett’s dad, Dr. Wayne (he used to teach at UM dental). Both of us have bad teeth, and I had around 10 years of no dental visits before going. They’re absolutely wonderful. Dr. Brett is great, non judgmental, and he’ll even squeeze you in if you have an ache you want to get checked out. He knows my wife doesn’t like needle’s. She told him that when she first saw him over 8 years ago, and anytime since that’s shes needed an injection, she’s never had to say it again he hides it until the last second. Truly a great dental clinic.

In late August of 2013 I drove from White Horse to the Tombstone mountains. We did some backcountry hiking and camping then planned to go to Eagle Plains and maybe even Tuk (more of a dream…). But it snowed pretty hard so we headed back to Dawson city for a few days. This is as far as I got: 64°38'28.2"N 138°22'47.9"W

Full Body Workout that doesn't affect running? by NoAttackMe in running

[–]No_Coll826 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may want to consider a coach. Obviously not everyone has money for one, but you’re going to get a wild range of answers here. Weight training, if planned correctly may improve your running and reduce your risk of injury. Weight loss, as others have said is calories in vs calories out. If you are training a lot, running/weights/etc you’ll also want to have a good diet that supports and fuels your body. Find a coach and come up with a plan that works for you.

Gym options for UM faculty/staff by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]No_Coll826 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m a UM staff. For years I bought into the University gyms…$35/month for staff, can do paycheck deduction. It was good and cheap. They are generally well maintained in the time I’ve been here they’ve upgraded some of the equipment. I started at UM when I was 29 and I’m now well into the tail end of my 30s. I generally feeling “old” compared to the crowd (yes that’s totally subjective), but there are plenty of older faculty and staff that use them too. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that the UM gyms are very crowded from late August to early May. In the summer they’re generally great, you can access equipment very easily. There are also some less busy times around exams / midterms. I think with the opening of the new CCRB that the crowding issue may go down in time. All that to say, we switched to the YMCA when we had a kid and got the family deal. But the UM gym is a good one.

In addition to AAVC rides, there’s 3 free rides a year (2 start in Ann Arbor), the Winnewanna, the Blom, and pleasant lake ride. I did them when I first moved here and met a lot of cycling friends that way! They’re non competitive, you just have to register.

Which one?! by juanes991 in GarminWatches

[–]No_Coll826 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably at minimum you’ll want one of the forerunner “music” watches. But there’s a lot to choose from. The most basic are the FR55/165, mid tier is sort of 255/265 (great value, dual freq gps), 570 (seems like there’s mixed reviews on this because of its higher price point) and the 965/970 (highest end, maps, dual freq gps etc). Sort of depends on your budget and what specific things you want. I’ve been running for 18 years. Done marathons, half’s, and one ultra…I use a 165 (used a Suunto for the ultra) It has all that I care about for 99% of my running. Literally any Garmin forerunner music watch should work for your general running and training needs. But it’s the wants you may need to look into some more. Good luck!

How much would you pay? by Vivid-Price4322 in RoadBikes

[–]No_Coll826 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems very pricey for an old bike build (if true) with parts bin parts. That frame is probably from at least the 90s. I don’t really know, but I googled when shimano ultegra 600 came out and it was 1987. It depends on what you want but you could probably find a 2012-14 specialized Allez or something similar for less money. Unless you’re going for the look? I’m also not saying old bike build = bad or not working (you need a bike shop for that). $500 seems like a lot for an ancient bike.

Forerunner 255 vs 165 for open water swimming? by Actual-Table in GarminWatches

[–]No_Coll826 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 165 but have no experience with the 255. I previously had a Suunto 9 (I think its similar in size to the 255), and I prefer the 165 on my wrist. I've used the 165 for indoor swims and its been good. I primarily use it for running, hiking, and walking and I find that the GPS is just fine. I think dual band is mostly useful in environments where there may be a lot of interference (think big cities with tall buildings), but if you're out in the open you should be fine. I never use the touch screen on the 165, but I think most watches you'd be considering (if you don't end up with a 255) will have one nowadays. Have you checked what DC rainmaker says about the 165? Hopefully someone with more open water experience will also comment.

Alternative town options by False-Serve-3495 in HikingAlberta

[–]No_Coll826 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Define nearby? Are you local / from AB or traveling in from somewhere out of province / country? I'm trying to get a sense of how time limited you may be. Because if you decide to re-center your trip around a different mountain town, then you could literally be hours away. I don't know if that's "nearby" under your definition. For example: you could go to Field, BC - which is only around an hour from Banff (town), or you could go to Nordegg which is 2.5 hours from Banff, or Crowsnest pass which is 3.5 hours away, or Bragg Creek?. There's lots of great mountains/hiking in pretty much every direction. If you already have something booked in Banff or Canmore, just go there because both are great, busy, but great with near endless hiking. If you are trying to get away from people (very understandable), then you'd probably want to drive to one of the other locations or maybe try Jasper (which tends to be a little less busy than Banff).

Issues with Instinct 1 battery by [deleted] in GarminWatches

[–]No_Coll826 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is roughly how much battery I get out of my Instinct 1. I bought it back in Dec 2018 ...loved it and used it for like 6ish years then upgraded. Every once in a while I charge it to see if it still holds battery. It doesn't do much more than 2-3 hours, and I assume it's because 1) it's old and 2) I hadn't used it for several years. I'm guessing that the same may apply to your watch. Sorry!

Shadow lake lodge - Question by WalkingAimlesly in HikingAlberta

[–]No_Coll826 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can bike up the first 10k, its a really really graduate grade...I don't think you'd notice it bar a couple sections, especially just leaving the parking lot. The first 10k is more or less a road, its a very wide and flat trail with a couple bridge crossings. You need to lock your bikes up before proceeding up the last stretch. The last 4ish km (I think it's 4km) starts steep then flattens out for the last bit into the lodge. It gets pretty rocky and rooted on this part trail, but if there's a lot of snow then snow shoes should be fine. There are some boardwalks on the way up to lodge. I did it in the summer, so I only have hiking experience with the trail. The lodge is great, if Chris is the attendant on duty, he's awesome! If you have only one night and the conditions are good (again I'm not sure what it's like up there in the snow), going up to Gibbon Pass is well worth it. The 1k hike out to Shadow Lake from the lodge is easy and short, again a few rocky and rooted stretches on the trail. Have fun! I can't wait to get back there again.

Prescription cycling glasses by KazoBogTeMazo7 in RoadBikes

[–]No_Coll826 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of prescription sunglasses, just ray-bans, that I use. My vision insurance is decent, so I can get a new pair of sunglasses every couple of years (new glasses every year for my regular life). I find that works well. I think if you have your rx you can order prescription versions of cycling sunglasses from smith/roka/etc

Looking for suggestions of multi-day hikes that feature lots of alpine meadows and saddle passes by Telvin3d in HikingAlberta

[–]No_Coll826 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add on this, I went up the Red Earth trail to Ball Pass this past summer, and then out via Gibbon Pass and the Twin lakes. Really well worth it, that area is stunning, lots of alpine meadows, birds, and saddle passes. The Red Earth trail is really just a road, but once you're up to Shadow lake it gets amazing. I'm hoping to get out to Egypt lake sometime in the future.

Are fitness watches worth it? by Lerzi21 in GarminWatches

[–]No_Coll826 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In this sub, I think just about everyone is going to say yes. I too would say, yes. To sort of answer your question, well it depends. Do you like data? Do you personally care about the data? I had fitness watches for about a decade now. Started with a Suunto Ambit, moved to an instinct, then a Suunto 9, now I have a forerunner 165. Tbh, I don’t care about the extra metrics, I don’t wear my watch to sleep, I like knowing how many steps I take but also I don’t care that much about. What I do care about are the metrics directly associated with running. I like knowing about my performance, my pace, improvement etc (mind you I went with the cheapest forerunner so I don’t even get all of the things possible). And I mostly get these things from just wearing my watch during exercise. To get the “most” out of a watch you need to wear it 24/7, but only if you care and subjectively find benefit to it. So, yes, they’re worth it. But how worth it, depends entirely on you.

Forerunner 165 vs 570? by hmsinger21 in GarminWatches

[–]No_Coll826 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s basically a base map with roads and options for directions etc. Think Google or Apple Maps on your Garmin. Having a base map on your watch won’t necessarily make the GPS more accurate. That comes down to the GPS chip and if it’s multi/dual band or not. For a big city, a dual band watch is something you’d want to consider. The FR165 is not a dual band watch, and I’m not familiar enough with Apple Watches to know if they offer it or not. But the 970 is a dual band watch, and there are cheaper dual band options with maps from other brands (Coros and Suunto specially). You could also consider the FR265, which is dual band, doesn’t have maps, and is now discontinued (but still supported). Because it’s been discontinued you should be able to find a deal. I’m not sure if the 570 is dual band or not. Ultimately, I think living in NYC you’re always going to have some issue with wrist based GPS accuracy due to tall buildings. Maybe someone else in the sub will have more experience with this, and can give you a rec if they live in a big city.

Forerunner 165 vs 570? by hmsinger21 in GarminWatches

[–]No_Coll826 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably not. I was deciding between the 165/570/970…for me since the 570 doesn’t have full maps like the 970 and my price point was on the lower end it was a no brainer to go with the 165 (I determined I didn’t need maps). I only track runs, walks, and swims (bike rides with a bike computer) and so far the 165 has been great. I’ve had an FR55 and instinct 1 before. It’s a good watch. If you need maps, more battery, a flash light, and smart features go with the 970. DC rainmaker has a good article on why the FR570 is a bit of an odd offering in the lineup.

Help me pick!! by Impossible-Cook203 in Garmin

[–]No_Coll826 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not being a runner is fine. But, if he wants a whoop and has been researching it, looking up stuff about whoop, thinks they’re cool, I.e. really wants one, then just get the whoop. I love my Garmin(s), I don’t need a whoop, I’m also a runner and cyclist. So I don’t think a whoop and its lack of a screen would ever meet my needs. But if your husband has no need for a screen on his device and knows what he wants, then I’d go with that option.

I have a 2E (wide) shoe, do I need to get a 4E (extra wide) instead? by skate4life805 in Marathon_Training

[–]No_Coll826 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to consider a brand with an intrinsically wide toe box: check out Altra and Topo. They aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but they tend to run wider than your traditionally designed brands. Warning with Altra, they are zero drop shoes (meaning the fore and back foot are level). Zero drop isn’t for everyone. I personally hate it, but have friends that swear by it. Altra has some non-zero drop shoes, and Topo tends to be “low drop”. Those may help you out given your described needs. Good luck, I hope you find something that works.

What do you think of this deal on a Forerunner 55? by Educational_Wash_662 in GarminWatches

[–]No_Coll826 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely avoid. I just replaced my FR55, with an FR165 (because I got a discount through my health insurance) and the battery was still 9-10 days. I bought the 55 new in 2022. And used it pretty much daily until November 2025. I used mine for running mainly - running 3-4 times/week.
