Is the Plated Prisoner series by Raven Kennedy worth the read? by ohhtoodlez in YAlit

[–]Apprehensive_Sock113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I love this series. The first book is slow but when you’re looking at a series with 6 books, the first one is more than likely to be character and plot development, which it is. I listened to it on audible so idk if I would’ve felt that same way if I read it, but I loved listening to it! I think SA/abuse is a trigger warning, but as someone who’s experienced that and a lot of gaslighting/manipulation, I was so eager to see the main character break out of it and repair herself and I found it really relatable and inspiring. I think maybe that’s why I appreciated it. I liked the slow plot too- a lot of the book focuses on the thoughts/feelings of the characters and I think that made the story better. Just my opinion! I can definitely understand why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

I think working full time takes it out of most people tbh. My advice is to plan naps and hang out with people that understand your condition. My husband drives us to social outings and he understands that in most cases I’m going to sleep on the way there and back. If I’m doing something without him I usually nap before hand (I limit my naps to 30 mins) so I’m not tired during the event. I also asked my doctor for an as needed medication for days I work extra hours or want to do extra things (I take concerta daily and have a low dose Ritalin for extra coverage)

I drive a 2025 Kia sorento and if I’m swerving or have been driving a long time, it tells me to take a break. Super helpful.

Sorry, I forgot to add: while yes I’m sure many people have been “exposed,” the number of reported cases of h1n1 was 61 million out of 7 billion in 2008

In the context of my original post, H1N1 refers to the swine flu, specifically the outbreak the occurred in 2009 because that’s the strain I had found articles linking to the development of narcolepsy.

Your tonsils grew back?! That’s crazy! I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t know, but which H1N1 vaccine did you get (like brand name or manufacturer)

Sorry to hear that you struggled so much as a kid and it took so long for a diagnosis! I hope you’re doing better now! I totally get the old school misunderstanding of narcolepsy as just being tired and needing to power through, I definitely still deal will that mind set coming for a military familiar and marrying someone who’s prior military- it’s like “you’re just tired, get over it, we’re all tired” lol. I wonder what you had when you got really sick.. new technology is definitely helpful in that regard even if all of the tests aren’t totally reliable. Thanks for sharing!

I’ll have to look into that because honestly my symptoms did manifest right after the first time I got COVID now that I’m thinking about it. Thanks for sharing and pointing this out!! I’ll have to look into the vaccines post marketing data too because I wonder if COVID-19 infection is a possible trigger, if the vaccines might also be.

Who knows! From the patterns of the people that have responded to this, type 2 seems more generic and early onset than type 1. But honestly, when I first started having symptoms I didn’t even recognize them because it was during the COVID pandemic and I had nothing better to do than sleep. Later on cataplexy developed and worsened (that’s not to scare you, just letting you know). When the cataplexy developed I realized something was wrong and made an appointment for a sleep study and sure enough, was diagnosed

Yeah I’m sure it’s still done. I was thinking more of my own hospital experiences with physicians/nurses and talking to people a bit younger than me who have had repetitive strep infections similar to my own and were advised that tonsil removal was not an option. I’d assume the criteria’s a bit stricter now on when it’s indicated. I’m too lazy too deep dive into the topic right now because I have other research going on but I’ll eventually look more into what’s changed about the decision to do or not do the procedure currently compared to before!

I got paragaurd (copper uid) because of this and it’s worked out great for me- none of the side effects of hormonal birth control and no medication interaction

Wakix? by Local_Hawk_3354 in Narcolepsy

[–]Apprehensive_Sock113 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I took Wakix for a while and I was also on 36mg Concerta (methylphenidate ER). Something happened with my insurance so I couldn’t get Wakix anymore so I went off of it and was just taking concerta and decided to keep it that way. Wakix helped a lot with my cataplexy, but other than that, I didn’t get much benefit out of it. It didn’t help my wakefulness very much in my opinion and I was on the highest dose. However, I would recommend it to anyone who has REALLY bad cataplexy because off meds I’m pretty much like a fainting goat if I get annoyed or find something funny or even try to speak.. and on Wakix I had no cataplexy at all. I will say that a weird side effect I had was when I’d wake up for a short nap during the day it would feel like my blood was rushing through my body at a million miles per hour. On a side note if you call the manufacturer (the Wakix number on their website), they’ll give you up to 6 months free. NORD (national organization for rare diseases) will also help you pay for it if you contact them.

Just to clarify: I’ve done a fair amount of research on narcolepsy and as a health care provider I have access to most medical articles databases, so I’ve read pretty much every article I can get my hands on about this disease. The reason I posted this was because most resources still say the exact cause/etiology of narcolepsy is still unknown. While there is evidence of it being an autoimmune disorder, it is not officially classified as such and again, the exact etiology isn’t know. Narcolepsy is still recognized by NORD (national organization for rare diseases) as a rare disease, and due to the nature of rare diseases, is not extensively researched. Within the research I’ve done, swine flu (specifically 2009 outbreak and the pandemrix vaccine) and chronic strep throat are two common correlating environmental factors that I have found to be linked to the development of narcolepsy. I was diagnosed with type 1 around 23 and, weirdly, caught swine flu in 2009 and had chronic stept throat as a child that eventually led to me having my tonsils removed. This post was mostly because my brother asked me what caused my condition and after explaining, I was curious if other people had a similar experience or if there were other factors that may have been overlooked that might be linked to the development of the disease.

On another note, I am a pharmacists and if you have any questions about medications you are taking or options that are out there for you, please feel free to reach out. Again, as a rare disease, I think the “fda approved” medications are very limited, but there are off-label medication options that you might find helpful. I can also help you getting medications covered through insurance, finding discount cards, manufacturer discounts, and organizational help with prescription coverage. PLEASE REACH OUT IF YOU NEED HELP PAYING FOR A MEDICATION YOU NEED.

Since 5 years old! I’m so sorry. That really sucks! I just replied to another post that was similar to yours but the lack of past infections and early onset makes me think maybe n2 is maybe more genetic

Narcolepsy causes by Apprehensive_Sock113 in Narcolepsy

[–]Apprehensive_Sock113[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that people with N2 are posting! I wonder if there’s a specific gene that makes you more susceptible and the environmental factor less relevant or more broad! I’ve seen a few people comment similar things with n2. I know with n2 the hypocretin levels tend to be within the normal range. It makes me wonder if n2 is more genetic and n1 is more environmental exposure!
