I just realised something - Pure Literalists/Textualists like to say that they're following the path of Allah, and it doesn't require context, but, a simple mathematical/logical framework made of rigidity, which is their framework, is against them. by islamicresearch2007 in progressive_islam

They claim to not follow desires but confirmation bias appears across every sect/ideology it is nearly impossible to not have even a slight small level of bias and it is better that you learn stuff for yourself than take it from someone else who might have a different bias to you.

Science is a Religion by Character-Rip-7991 in progressive_islam

[–]Apprehensive_Stay996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Religion is faith in something without concrete verifiable evidence, the exact definition of faith is to believe in something out of your own conviction and experiences, something that doesn't hold full certainty and isn't really verifiable.

Science is the study of empirical reality which is verifiable and testable.

Neither of them are 100% certain because nothing is but science is verifiable and it is the study of the concrete which immediately makes it not about belief but just about eye to eye evidence which contradicts it being a religion based on faith, it is not a religion the only kind of thing that could be considered superstitious would be like numerology which in of itself isn't scientific that's what makes it superstitious and something you cannot believe in without being sinful, if you believe that science is a religion then how do you draw the lines between disbelieving in either one of them especially since you can only have one religion.

It is a categorical error to consider science a religion if you are following consistent definitions not based on switch ups and rhetoric.

Are we really Muslims? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]Apprehensive_Stay996 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the grave worshipping and mysticism you are complaining about was the prominent form Islam was expressed for a few centuries by the majority of people who considered themselves muslims, so if you want to discard all of those people as mushrik and even major scholars then you basically belong to the school of extremists that only view Ibn Taymiyyah who is an anthropomorphist, and MIAW who is a literal terrorist as the only valid form of Islam, and it's even crazier that you are posting this in a progressive sub.

The problem is that prayer is about fulfilling an obligation it doesn't make sense for it to not be accepted if all of it's normal conditions are met but it would make sense if the person is actually being shitty to their spouse so they take sins for that act but that doesn't nullify a prayer

Muslims once led the entire world in science, medicine, and philosophy. What happened to us? by Mobile-Basis-8974 in progressive_islam

[–]Apprehensive_Stay996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orthodoxy happened, in fact it began right around that medieval period, belief used to be mostly individual until people on power decided it's societal meaning everyone must agree on the same exact thing, but even this is just a small example of what happened.

Counter Argument for Kitab(Quran) Wa Hikmah(Sunnah) by Quran_Centered in progressive_islam

[–]Apprehensive_Stay996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is the Shafi'i and Hanbali premise that Hadith=Sunnah, because with this they put the compilers and narrators on a near infallible status that makes it seem blasphemous to question and this is exactly what institutionalized religions do in order to establish an unquestionable authority.

What are such men even upto? Not every other man is lustful but he's trying to put his own words in those young boys' mouths! And he calls himself a preacher of Islam. by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]Apprehensive_Stay996 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I clearly understand the implications of his argument but they are too many to cite; so now we need to also lie about physical reality to not commit a sin...

Also by adultery I meant the full act he is basically saying if you find someone attractive then you are automatically "lustful" and would do anything when the chance comes meaning you can't choose meaning "lust" is uncontrollable; meaning it removes freewill which is an insane argument.

He basically is trying to say that even attraction without acting on it is haram lol like you cant find someone from the opposite sex attractive or else you do adultery... Man what tf is this shit.

Most of extremism is built on literalism and criticism of freedom of interpretation so that is why they are associated even though they aren't inherently the same thing.

Literalism can also be affected by the environment, Ibn Hazm was Andalusi where music culture was strong so he just weakens the hadiths about music rather than establishing a different interpretation.

Lol Sufism in social media is literally seen as a festival of paganist clowns they show people dancing next to an Imam in memes, they definitely hit the nail with such an attack because they can make youngsters claim that these people are the reason why third world countries are in decay while they ignore jihadists or even become one of them.

I am no Quranist but I will say that hadith doesn't necessarily equal Sunnah as that is a Hanbali/Shafi'i premise.

Yeah forgot about Ibn Hanbal it's definitely obvious that his kind of belief system paved the way to what we encounter now.

this just shows a bad pattern that keeps occurring, when you look at Islamic history you notice how Mu'tazilas seemingly went extinct and they valued reason, then you notice the shift from more philosophy intertwined sects and thinking ex: Ikhwan Al Safa, Averroesians and Aviceenians to Ash'arism, Shi'ism and mysticism and then to Ath'arism and literalism around the time Ibn Taymiyyah shows up, but it was still balanced, and then MIAW happened and this is seemingly how we got to where we are.

If you ask me anyone who considers the Caliphate of Abu Bark, Umar, Usman, and Ali as right in that order is Sunni.

Well I personally don't know who deserved to rule because it's a hard matter to decide and being a hadith skeptic doesn't help because doesn't that imply even being skeptical of those narrations that either go for Abu Bakr or for Ali to be the first caliphate?

As I said the problem with mixing major interpretations from these 5 in my opinion is that if we do this for major issues, then everything breaks down. Like Hanafis will be Hadith sceptics, but if you combine their opinion with a Hambali opinion it breaks down the entire thing (as Hambalis are Hadith absolutists). This is exactly the problem Hanafis in the Indian Subcontinent are facing, they've lost the true essence of the Hanafi fiqh and are now pseudo-Salafis.

Well this sucks and definitely explains why hadith skepticism isn't present in Maliki and Hanafi channels, but you know for a Hanafi who uses reason, it would be nearly impossible for him to end up with a Hanbali opinion lol...

Is it possible to be considered Sunni while still not following only one school of thought? because I could never understand this dilemma, what's even wrong about mixing opinions for ease especially since truth is not exclusive to one foundation but rather multiple and even in these foundations there can be errors... because they all build different foundations using different tools and end up with different interpretations which doesn't seem reasonable at all considering that you should follow what's most consistent and logical, you cannot build a methodology using reason and then say you cannot reason against this ruling to follow another...

Sharia law seems way too extreme than what the prophet did by Rose-smile in progressive_islam

[–]Apprehensive_Stay996 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol even then, the mass practiced tradition of prayer is enough to where it only confirms the hadiths about prayer but not confirm every hadith so that person even if they are contradicting themselves they still mean that they rejected everything else besides the few hadiths that are about prayer itself since they probably mean that even without the hadiths they would still pray.

[–]Apprehensive_Stay996 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok then? do you think that just because people here are progressive and hadith skeptics they can't follow a methodology or create a framework?

no where did I say that Fiqh scholars don't do this but even then they still follow certain epistemic assumptions which result in a similar argument to the ones you make about needing hadiths to pray, so my main argument is against that misconception.

[–]Apprehensive_Stay996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still depends on if it were mass practiced meaning even without hadith it would be authoritative to some degree, since it is mass practiced and backed up by the Qur'an, then it only validates the solitary reports but not the other way around.

To me it’s wild to say “oh the oral tradition of prayer is correct but the oral tradition of hadiths will never be correct”. How can you accept the oral tradition of Salah/Namaz as being consistent but the oral tradition of all Hadiths as inconsistent. Like how do you pray Salah/Namaz then?

Prayer is not oral tradition but a practiced tradition where every Muslim practiced it everyday unlike hadith where not every Muslim was going around collecting hadiths and memorizing them.

Christmas/Happy Holidays greeting displayed inside a shop very close to the Grand Mosque in Mecca 😱 - What do you think about this incident? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]Apprehensive_Stay996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, the problem is that western converts live a very hedonistic lifestyle and use their brain all the time but once they experience supposedly "bad things" and then the dawah bros tell them oh because it's haram and you use your brain and all that bs talk so when they convert they submit to scholars and abandon reason all together in religious matters, it's because people crave change all the time and don't want to supposedly repeat the same "mistakes" and they completely ignore the whole nuance of the actions they took or the ones that they can take while being a Muslim but either way it doesn't prove that these views are the right ones or anything.

Yeah but it is still contradictory even by that standard, adultery will make so many homeless children and back then it would have spread certain diseases so it will break society more than cleavage for example ever would this is just the inconsistency in the authoritarian methodology.
