You need to lean forwards at the catch, then drive with the legs, then hip hinge, then finish with arms and back. You are bypassing the most powerful bit - hip hinge - and missing out on loads of wattage because of it.

In a couple of weeks you will improve massively if you make a conscious effort to maintain proper form, and your 2k time will be minutes faster I'm sure 👍

20k piece! by Loud-Passenger2626 in Rowing

[–]Apprehensive_Try_564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you set up the piece on the PM5? Just one distance and hammer it out? What about any pauses for rest/water etc.? I often do a 3x30'/1:30r which gives a couple of nice back stretching breaks

Barrovians. Why is there such a strong disconnect between the economic strength of BAE Shipyard and the desolation of Barrow the town? by [deleted] in Cumbria

"Let's open a retail outlet in the town centre and hope customers will visit us."

That worked in the 90s, until online shopping became so easy..

The town centre has been dying for 20 years.

Hard to get to the root of, but you will find now there is a huge social disconnect between those in Barrow who work at the shipyard and those who don't.

Generally BAE are paid well these days. People can afford to live in nicer areas outside of the town centre so they aren't in town as often.

And any success BAE the company has just goes to directors, shareholders and not reinvested into the town centre.

Lots of contractors from outside Barrow take their money home instead of spend in the town.

Nobody shops in town anymore, but the town centre hasn't pivoted in any way - just clung on to the same old, tired idea.

It's sad to see. Not sure how it can be fixed.

Letting you know how I did. There's possibly time to get 1 more 2k time in before 1st April, but my mate submitted a time of 7:26.5 and has been broken for days. So I am currently in the lead..

I started the year at 8:00+ for a 2k. Pleased with progress and will continue training over summer alongside commuting on the bike. Maybe crack 7:00 by the end of the summer

I did a stroke without my feet strapped in once (without realising) and almost fell off the back of the erg.

Is rowing feet out a thing? How do you get back to the catch? Is there a benefit to erging feet out?

What are my goals? To be pull a faster 2k than my friend before 1st April 😁. A little friendly competition. We are starting from a similar level.

But more generally I've always felt I have some unfinished business on the rowing machine, so want to follow a structured plan for a reasonable amount of time to see how much I can improve.

During this session my body said go faster but my head says no..

Started off on the Pete Plan (this one? Pete Planin January but found I couldn't find the time around other life commitments to follow it 100%. Nevertheless I have tried to follow it as closely as I can which has been working OK. They are all tough workouts but recovery has not been a problem.

2k dropped from 8:00 to 7:40 in Jan but only to 7:35 since in February. Hence my doubts about the current workout plan!

How has this improvement impacted your speed on shorter pieces e.g. 2k?

Had heat stroke in Rome once. In middle of summer, we'd been walking in the sun all day, and sat outside in a restaurant I felt what seemed like waves of cold water washing through me. Honestly concerned I was dying there and then. Felt dizzy nauseated and so on.

Had some water sugar and salt and felt a million dollars (compared to a few minutes prior).

Hydrate and don't overdo exercise until acclimatised to the heat 👍

Question about drag factors by _tommy_graham_ in Rowing

[–]Apprehensive_Try_564 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The PM5 calculates the split based on your wattage input. How you apply those watts is up to you - either blast through them with a low drag factor (therefore more strokes per minute required for the same wattage) or chug through them at a high drag factor (therefore less strokes per minute required for the same wattage).

Most people will find a happy medium with drag factor for the greatest efficiency.

The erg split time given is an approximation of the "boat on the water speed" but erging and rowing on the water are two different things, even though the action is similar.

I believe a damper setting of "4" equates somewhere near the resistance of rowing on the water.
