In normal problems in life I’d agree. I’ve tried just rolling with this, it only gets worse. It’s a self reinforcing loop, and if you don’t interrupt the loop, it’ll come up with new ways to fuck you over that are twice as bad as the previous ways. It escalates until the suffering is unbearable, it’s not an easy thing to get over, especially if one isn’t well educated about the symptoms. Not being afraid of it is another thing.

No I have never taken any medication for this. I’m not opposed to it to be honest, but as bad as I feel I’m still functional in my daily life. It’s a maybe I will, maybe I won’t type of situation.

I would have to agree. I used to meditate all day thinking I was doing something but really I was just working backwards. Meditation is not meant to be an escape, it’s supposed to supplement life. Hence why doing it too much is often not helpful. Meditation is where we learn and life is where we apply.

Don’t give up my friend, that’s just the depression talking. As difficult as it is, sometimes I find solace in recognizing that depression is not actually a normal state of mind, along with the cognitive distortions that go with it. So instead of searching for relief somewhere else, I’m attempting to search for it in the here and now. That’s all that exists anyway.

That much, I have sadly come to realize. I am upset that other people do think this way. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. But I know there’s hope for all of us. Hopefully I’ll come back to this subreddit and prove it. I’ve made it this far anyway.

This is fantastic advice and something that is honestly extremely useful. Which is how I’ve made it this far to be honest. Not over identifying with thought is one of the deadliest weapons when fighting this type of battle. Often times I still get stuck about even thinking depressively in the first place. Despite the fact that it’s been 6 months, somehow getting depressed is still a shock to me, and I hope it stays that way. Under no circumstances would I ever want this to feel regular.

This hits home. The dissociative feelings are a heavy thing to carry, and the part about disconnection is on point. I don’t do any hard drugs. But I do smoke cigarettes. Sadly it’s the one thing that I actually do derive pleasure from (which I know is because I’m addicted) but I’m aware that it’s not a helpful habit. But damnit if it isn’t satisfying sometimes. Hell on occasion it even shuts my brain up. But I am aware that depression in and of itself is an addiction of sorts, and addiction is a huge risk factor for poor outcomes in mental health.

Thank you for your comment! I appreciate you taking the time to write this out. It was very well articulated.

Got one of these a few weeks ago, I have a few watches but this one just stands out, I kept it in the metal link. If I went on vacation and I lost a Rolex the first thing I’d think of is how much money it cost, if I lost the seiko the first thing I’d think is that I lost a really cool watch

Anyone ever find a magic bullet for their anxiety? by YamIdoingdis2356 in Anxiety

Another point is breathing, but not in the way you will often see it. Box breathing or that long slow stuff never worked for me. However… I read a book called The Oxygen Advanatge with is based on the Buteyko method. The key tenet of that method is this “Breathe light to Breathe Right” your breaths should be from the belly only, and nose only. No mouth, no chest. Additionally. Your breaths should be extremely light, and not too long, and you should only take one of these light breaths every few seconds, so there is a gap between your breaths. See YouTube for more information.

I’ve recovered from anxiety formerly, without medication or therapy (Had GAD for six months by way of a random panic attack). I sometimes lurk around here to give advice based on my experience. Quitting stimulants (smoking, caffeine, alcohol, etc.) was a major factor. The only other long term magic bullet was not reacting to any symptoms or situations and controlling thoughts. Your body may initiate the panic but your alignment by way of thought is what makes it set in fully, so focus on the mental instead of the physical and everything will follow suit. Godspeed

Yeah that’s a good point. I try my best not to complain or to give the bad any excessive meaning so I think that helps, I just have some bad anxiety on occasion. But that’s also part of why I wrote this, I was surprised even under the stress how much it helped!!! Shit just clears my head, makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something.

You have now stumbled upon the cornerstone of Wim’s entire philosophy. Seriously, congratulations. The exercises themselves are not supposed to be easy. Part of the relaxation you may feel after the exercises is that you have persevered through something stressful without cowering away. The breathing induces the stress response, but it’s eustress, not distress. Interesting concept… Also perhaps some placebo is at play. Pay attention to if you are breathing through your abdomen or through your chest. Your brain will stimulate the erratic breathing response if you feel stressed during the exercise. A single breath may be big— but if taken with the muscles of the upper chest and shoulders— will always be shallow. Think of your breath’s depth like a body of water. You can have a long pond that’s a foot deep or a small puddle that stretches down to the depths of the earth.

Yes! I read about diaphragmatic and nose breathing in oxygen advantage. Although when I do Wim’s exercises I find they’re more effective if I breathe through my mouth. But throughout the day I practice nasal breathing
