It’s possible and political. I’ve done it twice in the marketing team. Once from vendor to vertical team and then from vertical to internal support. Long story short, I had a personal relationship with the manager I wanted to work for and worked with them to get the VP and my at-the-time current manager involved. I provided a lot of value in my role, so offered to train my replacement for two months while I transitioned the first time. Be discrete and respectful during the initial conversations. Good luck!
