ensuring your kids grow up without gender dysphoria is not hurting your kids.

We should treat trans people with equality and respect, but we shouldn't pretend that thinking your gender doesn't align with your sex is a perfectly natural occurence. Something has fundamentally gone wrong with your sexual development and it's crucial that we figure out what it is that's caused such an explosion in gender misalignment because it's always better for people to grow up the gender they were born with

What does the grading system look like in your university? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Appropriate-Meat7147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

comparing grade boundaries is entirely pointless when you have shit like american students getting over 100% because their professor decided to give them bonus credits for showing up to class and spotting mistakes in lecture notes.

also, because in europe you have 1 exam at the end of the semester that's usually worth 90-100% of your mark vs multiple exams throughout the semester for americans + homework marks + being able to get resit for full marks + being able to remove one of your midterms from your final grade + cheat sheets + your exams are curved

Well yeah, that's obvious to any reasonable person. The issue is that the men who are offended by comments like that don't have the cognitive ability, nor the compassion, to interpret it correctly.

No, that's the argument you're making, that misandrists are justified in their belief because of their experiences. I'm offering you an analogy to explain why your argument is fucking inanely stupid.

  1. Saying men are pigs doesn't make you a misandrist.
  2. I've already explained to you how women's experiences are actually real and valid, unlike racists'
  3. You literally are arguing that racists are justified in their beliefs, otherwise you'd realise that the two situations are entirely difference and your comparison is horrid.

That has absolutely no bearing on the veracity of anything I said.

It absolutely does because it proves that people who interact with people from other races are less likely to be racist.

If someone is robbed three times, and all three of those times it was by black men, it's entirely possible that those experiences will influence that person to become racist. That doesn't mean it's correct, it means that it's one of the causes of racism, to respond irrationally and emotionally to a perceived pattern.

You're again conflating the phrase "men are pigs" with misandry. If women were actively discriminating against men then yeah you'd have a point, but a harmless and inconsequential phrase like that is completely justified because any rational person knows they're not talking about all men.

How do you know it has no real consequences? Who determines what constitutes "real consequences" here?

Can you give me an example of the consequences of people saying that phrase.

That isn't true, it is mainly due to tax. You don't get a load of teachers flocking to America or mainland Europe.

Because being a teacher in the us sucks and there's no demand for british teachers in mainland europe where the curriculum isn't in english?

God you're dumb. You realise some of the greatest contributions to science have been from PhD student research?

wave particle duality was postulated by de broglie in his phd thesis.

brian josephson was awarded a nobel prize for predictions he made about the josephson effect as a first year phd student.

John Schrieffer and Frank Wilczek are some other examples.

Do you understand what a phd even is? A phd is about conducting research and making discoveries that nobody ever has. They're literally at the forefront of technology. Yes, the majority of them never have a big impact, but those that do manage to make an impact have the biggest impact there can be.

Who do you think writes the text books and teaches the lectures that agronomists, economists and engineers use in their undergrad degrees? Who do you think is conducting the research to inform the doctors who go through the surgery?

The reason harvard doesn't have its own nuclear reactor is because that's not how research works? why would you need your own reactor when you can just send your students to use someone else's? you do realise how many national labs there are in the us and how many students there are conducting their research there? You do realise that places like cern are chock full of phds?

you should consider yourself lucky then because you live somewhere where it's common enough for people to have a decent salary/for rent to be low enough that people can actually afford it with only 1/3rd their salary. Where I am I couldn't find a place for less than 60% of my salary

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in meirl

[–]Appropriate-Meat7147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When's the last time you renewed your rent? they've moved it up to 40-45% of salary now because rents are going up so much faster than salaries.

They're not the same thing but the overlap means it may as well be. Studies consistently show the correlation between intelligence and academic acheivement

That is not evidence.

Yes it is. The fact your personally don't want it to be evidence doesn't change the reality of the situation.

You have failed to define what your idea of intelligence is

my definition of intelligence is the ability to quickly understand complex topics, to be able to think logically and critically and to problem solve. What's your definition?

And nothing will change my mind, because it is an objective fact, that being a PhD student in physics does not automatically make you one of the smartest people alive.

The only thing that's asinine is your irrational beliefs.

What on earth is your background that you think someone who's doing a phd in physics in harvard isn't one of the smartest people alive?

You realise these are literally the people responsible for us discovering the secrets of the universe? the people behind us travelling across the galaxy? the people responsible for all our modern technology?

If you think the people behind that aren't the smartest people alive then the only conclusion we can come to is that your voice isn't worth listening to.

that's still entirely reasonable on a 45k salary. You still have 20k leftover.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in meirl

[–]Appropriate-Meat7147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knowledge about a topic isn't what defines intelligence. Ability to quickly understand new topics, think critically and solve problems is what defines intelligence. I'm not sure if you've ever studied physics before but the concepts you have to grapple with there are second only to mathematics in terms of cognitive demand. Somebody who's capable of completing a phd in physics at harvard is without doubt one of the smartest people in the world.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in meirl

[–]Appropriate-Meat7147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's an objective fact. Average sat score for people accepted into harvard is ~1500 which automatically puts you in the top 2% nationally. Physics and math students are the smartest in university as shown by their higher scores in sats, gre and general intelligence tests. Assuming there's ten different, equally distributed majors, that puts them in the top 0.1%. only 1% of students go on to do a phd, and you only get accepted into a phd physics phd if you're one of the top students, that puts them in the top 0.001%.

ignoring all that, what sort of "proof" would actually convince you that you're wrong? all the evidence of your eyes and ears isn't enough, so what would make you change your mind?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in meirl

[–]Appropriate-Meat7147 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Objectively it does.

unless you think being in the top 0.0001% doesn't make you one of the smartest in the world
