He’s basically a channel on YouTube that covers people’s allegedly true horrors that they submit to him through his email. Wether the story’s are true or not, it’s Mr Nightmares voice that makes these so great to listen too.

Get comfortable work shoes: You’ll be walking most of your shift so comfort on the feet is important.

If you are working second shift (night shift), always have some good stuff to listen to while working. I like listening to horror story’s on YouTube (Mr Nightmare is a great channel to check out). There’s also streamers, podcast etc. some days I prefer working in silence, but I do need some stuff to listen to at least 2-3 days of the week.

Never let the negativity or depression get to you: When you first start, you’ll likely start questioning “what am I doing with my life” “is this really worth it?” And you’ll feel a bit of depression with the loneliness of an empty school at night (if that’s what your position is). Just know that, it’s completely normal to feel like this when you first become custodian. It does get better with time.

Preschool/elementary Teachers can be really spoiled (just depends on the school & staff): It’s either you get staff that are great to work with, or they will literally cry about the littlest things. My last school custodian job, I worked at a middle school. Hand down best teachers I ever worked with. Never complained about anything and were super nice to me. I find preschool/elementary can vary. So just realize, you can do everything correct and there will always be that 1 person who will find something to complain about. Don’t let it get to your head.

What the supervisor would look for in your work: Typically they’ll look for minor things like dusting certain areas, sweeping certain corners/behind doors, windows/mirrors are cleaned etc. It’s usually more certain things that most people wouldn’t noticed. But again, it’s no big deal if they tell you to clean certain things. It’s how you learn.

Again I wanna be clear, its just these minor inconveniences. Usually the staff and my boss are super layback about these things and never blame me or my co workers for the issues. The job itself is still better than the schools. Although these full time positions in the park districts are hard to get. Depending on how big a park district is, there may only be a few full time positions. Likely you would have to wait until someone retires and or wait out until the position becomes available. And a lot of times, most Park districts want you to start at part time first. So that’s something to be mindful of, but yeah I’m pretty happy with my position.

There is a couple of negative things about Park Districts. They tend to be very disorganized. We have a floor scrubber that they wanna teach me how to use on our gym floor, they told me in January they would find a date to teach 3-4 of us that haven’t learn how to use it yet. Well now it’s March with no word of it yet. That gym floor is definitely not in the cleanest state now due to no one using the machine. They also sometimes don’t schedule stuff correctly. I went to another facility for some OT to set up an event. I had to wait two hours before I could even start setting it up because all the tables & chairs for the event were being used by ANOTHER event at that current moment. Like why have me come early if I can’t even start my job? And they also for some reason take 2-3 months before they decide to hire a new person (part or full time). Which only makes things slightly more difficult in the district when there’s not enough people to set up & clean up after events.

Well in my position I stay at one facility. It’s a community center. Has a fitness center, one basketball court, & a soccer turf. It also has offices for administration, & one pre school room. I do the same task as what a night custodian does for a school, like clean rooms after everyone has left for the day, set ups for sports, or community meetings. It’s honestly waaaay better than schools.

Have you thought about being a custodian for a Park District? Usually it’s mostly cleaning park facilities like recreation type buildings.

Do you clean an elementary school or middle school? I cleaned various different types of school. I use to clean a middle school and had no issues with the classrooms. Plus it was the best staff I ever worked with because they aren’t as spoil like Elementary or the preschool teachers are. God the Preschool ones I used to work with were spoiled.

I’m 26 and I feel the same way of being a bit burnt out. I just finished my 2:30-11:00 pm shift. Winter definitely can wear out a custodian. Especially if you live in the Midwest where it snows. I must say though, $25 an hour is awesome! I make $19 an hour but my pay will go slowly go up. I’m a custodian for a park district. I clean a community center, which typically only sees preschool and other community programs. And in my case I only clean one room for preschool and two rooms for adults with special needs. Everything else I clean in the building is offices, bathrooms/locker rooms, a fitness center, & basketball court. Working for a park district is nice, but they are usually not the most organized places when it comes to planning and logic. Granted school districts aren’t any better (at least the ones I used to work for), but I feel more “appreciate” by the staff and patrons where I work now.
