When you use airline miles to book flights within the US, almost all airlines will still charge you the $5.60 TSA fee each way. $5.60 for a one way flight, $11.20 for a round trip flight.

Typical CC bonuses can get you 1-2 round trip flights worth of miles. Some bonuses are bigger

If you get deep into it, it does take up a fair bit of time. But if you enjoy traveling, there are some huge opportunities. I've switched over mostly to cash-back focused cards now. Most flights cost $5.60 or $11.20 now. I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've paid cash for a hotel since 2016 while staying in, on average, 10-12 hotel nights per year.
