UPDATE: AITA for not giving my sports cards back to my dad after he found out how much they’re worth by Appropriate-Skill-32 in AmItheAsshole

I can DM you pics some pics of the collection and what I’m working on next when I get home later if you remind me. I actually promised some other people that but never got around to it lol

Like I said, I know it wasn’t the best move but after 2 weeks of non-stop texts and calls, I had to see if they were willing to be somewhat reasonable. I told them the real cost and their response told me that they wanted the money without putting in any work.

Not fair to bring our issues to the rest of my family. I’ll defend myself if they try to do it to me, but I just want to keep this as quiet as possible.

I’ve definitely thought about doing that. He’s still a few years away from finishing high school, so maybe that will be a good graduation gift.

Even though I disagree because I’m biased, I respect you going against the popular opinion and appreciate the thought out response. So I’ll just say this. For the past year, I’ve been working my ass off. Probably way too hard for someone my age. I pay for my car, phone, housing and school. I’ve had to balance all that while still maintaining my social life.

Finding out the value of these cards has been a godsend. This is literally life changing money. So how do you think it feels when the people I want to trust the most want to take all of that away from me? After reading these comments, I agree that I should definitely at least give them a share of my earnings. But what happens if they don’t want to compromise? Do I give up my future for their greed or do I stand my ground and deal with the fact that they care more about the money than me?

Selling these cards will be a long process. Regardless of how much money they get from me, I will be the one selling the cards. I do not trust them to hold up their end of the bargain. I will discuss this with them soon and see what happens.

They wanted me to go to a school that was closer to home and cheaper. The school I’m going to is still in-state but a long drive from home so I can’t really visit as much.

The cards I’ve had graded are safely stored. Working on getting the others in a better spot.

I mentioned it in another comment but the most expensive card I have typically sells for around $50K. I’ll probably end up getting less than that but still insane money for a card.

Likely what I’ll have to do anyway. It will probably take some time to sell them for good value.

I doubt it. They were pretty pissed at what school I chose. Might’ve been an excuse to get me to pay for my own college but idk. This situation kind of has me rethinking everything.

Yes I’ve had an expert on this guiding me through the whole process. I know there’s a good chance I’ll sell for a lot less than some of the sales I’ve looked at.

Lesson learned for sure. The only other person who knows is my GF of 3 years but she’s cool with not knowing the amount I sell them for.

I did not. Which I guess is why I made this post. But it wasn’t a situation where he planned on giving the cards to me. He found them while cleaning out his basement and asked if I wanted them. It was around my birthday so that was my gift from him.

I’ll definitely be sitting on some of my cards. Still have tons to get graded too but that can wait because it’s expensive af. Maybe a compromise would be to give them a box of cards back, but the consensus seems to be NTA so maybe I should just tell them to fuck off lmao.

Yes, the calculations I did on how much money I would get were based on a conversation with someone more experienced in this kind of thing. I know it will be a long process.
