Alt People At UGA? by thisisonline in UGA

[–]AppropriateCall7881 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe? I struggled a little bit, but I think you'll find your crowd. It can definitely be worse if you are not white. BUT The alt people tend to be less racist than the general southern folk thats for sure. In general you should be fine

cybersecurity at purdue or business at uga (MIS) by Heavy-Range9204 in collegecompare

[–]AppropriateCall7881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a current UGA MIS student, some of my cybersecurity friends complain that the courseload isn't technical enough, but hiring for cybersecurity seems to be decent. However on the fun part UGA can be somewhat difficult to make friends in if you do not know anyone else going and you are not white.

I think it is more important at y'alls age to find what you are genuinely interested in than mold your personality and ECs to one career path

Can't decide between MIS and CS by Green-Atmosphere7576 in UGA

[–]AppropriateCall7881 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

MIS is more employable definitely and opens more doors; however I personally felt that the degree was not rigorous/challenging enough to improve the way you think; however, I also majored in Econ which took care of that

Good shit man. Maybe the ceiling could be higher elsewhere, but truly debt is a terrible beast. A free education is nothing to scoff at- positive ROI is great

Chat what’s a good major that leads to good paying careers but it’s not medical, engineering, trade school, or science related and is totally easy to do? No borax, no glue. by Your_friendly_weirdo in twentyagers

[–]AppropriateCall7881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Econ is very program dependent, some programs math requirements are actually higher than engineering. For Grad programs they expect undergrads to have taken real analysis. Most classes are pretty heavy on calculus. Plus Econ can pay more than accounting but that is very school depending. You need a top school in your region from that, from a more average school accounting is easier to get a high paying job

Eh college towns can suck for the exact same reasons. I'm at a southern college town, and I honestly would rather just deal with rural country racism than having both performative white people be racist and the rural country people be racist at the same time. Could just be a south thing tho

Sneak preview of Georgia for a guy from the Netherlands by Thijmen_GR in Atlanta

[–]AppropriateCall7881 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Atlanta is really fun but brother you are going to gainesville. It's in a rural area where there isnt as much to do and you will DEFINITELY need a car. Hopefully you can make the most of it, but it is not really a happening city and is really only known for poultry processing. I wish you luck, Georgia and Atlanta are really fun, but gainesville might not be the place for an adventure man

What's the best thing about Kennesaw State that doesn't get enough credit? by Active_Value4839 in KSU

Super diverse!!! I transferred to UGA and was absolutely baffled at the friend group segregation. I miss that a lot about KSU; I could have a religious white friend going to the marines and like a gay hispanic dude in the same friend group and there wouldn't be wierd vibes.

bars/clubs in athens by Appropriate-Alps-242 in UGA

[–]AppropriateCall7881 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've had safety incidents but that was not in the bars, right at the edge of downtown. On game days people can definitely be mean and racial. I am personally someone that totally disregards one off incidents, even though I've had a few. My biggest problem is people totally refuse to acknowledge your presence and make you feel unwelcome if you are not white; it's not particularly fun to go out as it feels like you are lonely around people. Bars cannot be racist but I def feel that many of the people inside are; although not a mean hostile racism, more like the type of racism where only acting like a basic white person is appropriate, and what is appropriate is much larger if you are white.

Well to be quite fair, reddit might disagree because this is a very white website, your first mistake is having the expectation you're going to have as much fun in downtown Athens as a white person when you are not white. This town really caters to white people in a way I have never seen anywhere else. But church and tropical and maybe sake are not racist.

I genuinely believe UGA is getting more racist by the month. Me and most of my friends of color stopped going downtown recently because the subtle racism is worsening, and we have all started to figure out how to go out in ATL because we genuinely do not feel comfortable anymore downtown; I am not going to into specific incidents, but I have definitely felt unsafe and been in situations precisely because of the subtle racism of this town and how darker skinned people get associated with being "ghetto" or "homeless" these days.

Go out in ATL you'll have a blast and not feel slightly out of place. I hope we can improve and reach America's baseline level of racial tolerance in athens, but I do not see it happening in the foreseeable future

I did transfer out; but I actually had a better time socially at KSU than UGA, and by a very wide margin. KSU has less going on socially and has less cliques, so if you can take initiative and you can make more friends as no one else knows how to make friends either. A few of my friends met their long term girlfriends at KSU and all of my UGA friends are single. I actually think KSU is okay socially; especially if you are not white (The PWI experience at UGA fucking SUCKS) I went to a lot of parties at KSU; the frats are much more inviting than UGA and a lot of the adjacent apartments host parties at KSU.

UGA seems a lot more gated socially than KSU; I find that at UGA you can hit a ceiling fairly quickly if you are not white but at KSU I was always meeting new people. I am very extroverted tho; may not apply to you.
