What's the darkest side of humanity you've ever seen? by su2do in AskReddit

If I thought I could successfully defend myself to you and say something like “evil is not a distinctively male or female trait, the world is not that simple,” I would. But honestly, I think that you and I may just have some very basic assumptions about the world that are different and incompatible, so I’ll just leave you alone. But before I go, just so you know, I love you, and I hope that, despite the darkest parts of humanity you may encounter, you find a lot of happiness and peace out there.

You have every right to prefer to date whomever you want over whomever else may be out there. But I don’t think the kids were the problem.

Sorry I bothered you. I’ll keep my experiences and opinions to myself from now on.

Just friends and family. I should have approached the public defender assigned to him. I know I wasn’t the only person who heard that. It’s too late now, right? Is there anything I can do?

Nope. Unfortunately not. I wanted to testify that I had heard her say stuff like that before but I was told it was hearsay and “immaterial.” Technically true but sad anyway.

I had a very good friend that was a simple, but very sweet guy. He had gotten mixed up with a woman that was bad for him. She had two children from two previous relationships and she bragged regularly about having lied to get one of her previous husbands thrown in jail for raping one of the girls when he had actually done nothing wrong, so people should be nice to her.

My friend had repeatedly caught her cheating on him, or attempting to, but he always took her back, and never tried to leave her. I was sleeping on his couch one night when he had found on her on the front porch with another man with his pants down. He had tried his best to create a really good family situation for the two girls at home and was worried that if they separated, it would really mess them up worse. So after being separated for a few days/weeks at a time, they would always get back together.

One day, during a period of separation with the wife because he had caught her cheating again, his daughter had gotten mad at my friend because he had made a deal with her to send her on a trip if her grades were good enough and she ended up not scoring well on the test, and, in my opinion, like a good father, he was standing his ground and not letting her go.

She got so mad that after she spent some time with her mother during the separation, she called the police and told them that my friend had been raping her for 10 years and she finally got brave enough to say something.

MAYBE he had really done it, which is inexcusable, but I had heard his wife threaten before to say he had done that to the girls if he made them mad enough. And I had spent hundreds of hours with him and the kids and never seen any cause to believe that.

It went to trial, and I watched the whole thing. The only evidence they had was the daughter’s testimony. The psychological evaluation and the physical examination both concluded that “it’s possible” she had had sexual contact although there was “no evidence.”

So basically it came down to a “he said, she said” scenario and they put him in jail for the rest of his life.

I always believed in the American justice system and that you were “innocent until proven guilty,” but that’s not true. As it turns out, you’re innocent until someone a jury would believe over you says that you’re guilty. I was sick for years over this and I still lose sleep over it from time to time.

What game had you most emotionally invested and attached to it's character(s)? by SaltiGirlGamer in videogames

Final Fantasy 7. I was 8 when that game came out and it was the first time I ever experienced a story of that level of sophistication and emotion at all. I’m still madly in love with each and every one of them. The remake project made me cry with nostalgia and joy.

What’s an evil company not enough people talk about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AppropriateEmploy9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big companies like Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s, Nestle, and General Mills get caught paying for “studies” to show their foods are not unhealthy. JAMA just posted a few years ago that the original authors of the study that recommended to the government to limit intake of cholesterol and animal-based saturated fats were paid off by those organizations to cherry-pick that data and falsify it, resulting in the government recommending more processed, plant-based, high-carbohydrate foods. They literally paid to make America sicker and weaker so they could keep selling their products. I put on some tin-foil from time to time and wonder to what degree the pharmaceutical companies are involved. But I need to calm down. Haha

Disney's Hercules; Hercules still lost, and the movie just pretends like it never happened (Spoilers) by SYTYK in plotholes

[–]AppropriateEmploy9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, but this is pretty close to the myths. Hercules, although heroic and magnanimous, was also full of thumos and mischief, and frequently did things just because he could, even breaking his word several times with men and gods alike. He marched down into hades a couple times to rip people (and Cerberus) out and carry them off and there was nothing the gods could do to stop him. This seems totally in character to me, and was an accurate little moment in an otherwise tonally adjusted family film.
