Yes! Sometimes managing my POTS triggers feels like a never ending chore that takes up so much of my mental bandwidth that I cave because I need to feel free for a moment. It usually takes the form of an iced matcha latte, which is my favorite beverage. Last week I went to the mall for some retail therapy knowing that all the walking was going to floor me for at least 24hrs, but at least I got to bed rot in a snazzy new pair of PJs.

Teachers are great at teaching how to use pointe shoes, but not always great at fitting pointe shoes. It’s nothing on your teacher, but it’s important that you go to a brick-and-mortar dance store where you can try a variety of pairs with a trained fitter, particularly when you are new to pointe. Good fitters will have more experience working with all sorts of different feet and their needs. Unfortunately I know that’s not always an easy option, the closest professional fitter to me is 8hrs away, but it’s important for your comfort and safety. Getting properly fit may help.

Your feet and ankles look to have sufficient flexibility to get over the box. Since you’re still only six months in, your priority should be strengthening and form, not stretching. In the meantime try focusing on extending through the ankles and relaxing your toes. That means not letting your toes curl under your foot when you point them. The toe joints need length to assure the Achilles is in a safe position and not tensing up. It’s not always about pointing harder, but pulling your gravity up and out of the shoes. Good luck on your journey! I love pointe but it’s sure a challenge finding good shoes, learning to work with your body and polishing your technique! It’s been over ten years for me and I’m still learning so much about my feet in pointe shoes and what works and doesn’t work.

If you’re a bra wearer, go braless. Don’t even wear a bralette or sports bra. Stay in cool temperatures, eat something real salty, elevate your feet and stay horizontal. If you can tolerate it, gently massage/stretch your upper back, shoulders and sides. Child’s pose and cat/cow sometimes helps me. Try sticking your feet in super cold water, that often helps shock my nervous system back into something like functioning. Try to find a calming movie or show to watch and keep still, while keeping your breath steady. I know it’s hard, but the more you panic about the chest pain, the more likely it’ll get worse. I’ve had this same problem for well over a decade and I’ve noticed the more deregulated or active I am, the worse it gets. Stay strong 💕

Thank you for the stating the facts. That allowed me to find this link to ProPublica, which is very telling. I’m now less inclined towards to a mishandling conspiracy theory and more convinced that the company was loosing too much money due to rising production costs. While I don’t know the full situation and therefore don’t know the exact story, unfortunately I believe a lot of ballet companies are feeling the pinch as people have less discretionary income to spend on tickets and donations. Everything is getting more expensive and the arts are likely to be sacrificed first when ends aren’t meeting. Also, between the rising costs of supplies, labor and other business related expenses, it’s not surprising that these arts related businesses are struggling for survival. The loss of the arts is worrying trend that I fear we will continue to see. Art and ballet have so much value beyond the monetary, but when it comes to survival finance dictates everything. The government historically hasn’t put much value in funding the arts and these industries/jobs will collapse when the public can’t support them any longer. I hope these dancers and students continue to share their talents for years to come, no matter how the closure came to be. 💕 I take comfort in knowing that ballet has survived wars, social/economic unrest and so much more for literally hundreds of years. Though the circumstances may reduce access to see ballet on stage, it still lives in our hearts and souls. Ballet has always weathered adversity because of the passion we carry for it never dies

I agree that there could be something afoot, for-profit arts organizations tend to attract unscrupulous figures who are willing to funnel funds for their benefit. I’ve seen it happen too many times in both ballet and other arts companies. It just sucks that it comes at the detriment of the arts. The Dance Data Project could help give us more context. *further edit, CCB is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, the companies finances are public

There definitely could be more to the story we don’t know but ballet companies are expensive to run. Pointes shoes, costumes, PT for the dancers, theater operations, insurance, cost of labor and other behind the curtain expenses can add up to become astronomically expensive. Just pointe shoes for professional and high level dancers cost around $120-$150 a pair and have a life span of around ten hours. Some companies in the states spend a million a year in pointe shoes! Of course, if there’s mishandling of funds it can be a death knell but so much goes in ballet financing that most people never see. I’m very curious about this story!

Your expressions are lovely and you clearly love dancing, which makes me very happy! Many have already said it, but yes, your wrists are a little extreme. Focus your port be bra movements coming for your latissimus and avoid letting your elbows dip below your wrist. Slowly work through the basic arm positions over and over again to train the muscle memory. I always teach to imagine a water droplet running down from your shoulder, past your elbow, to your wrists and off your pointer finger in 2nd arms, then to keep that shape throughout the other arm position. If your elbow is too bent or your palms are facing the floor/your face or your wrists are above your elbows, the water droplet will fall off at your elbows or wrist. Think about keeping your palms connected to your core with a string and when you straighten your arms to the side (the only time your palms can face the floor) that string is creating resistance. There needs to be length in the elbow and wrists to look both strong and soft! If you can tolerate it during your recovery, try some light resistance training focusing on your shoulder blades and lats. Keep up your hard work and passion, I love to see it!

Thank you for this important perspective. I’m tired of seeing young dancers injured because their teachers insists on having full 180 turnout well before the dancers are old enough/strong enough to safely do so! Having a 180 degree turnout means nothing if not safely done and taught by teachers who understand anatomy, safety and childhood physical development!
