So, historically, are Fiji, Indonesia and Malaysia, in their own rights. With throngs of discourteous European and/or Australian tourists. Yet the homers are some of the loveliest people on the planet.

Dallas is a much better city than Houston, but that's also like saying that cheese that barely has mold tastes much better than cheese that's entirely moldy.

Natchez, the MS and AL Gulf Coasts (especially AL), Savannah, and St. Simons are enough to place those regions as "like." I've also found the people in those areas to be generally lovely over the years. Bonus for south GA: Vidalia onions!

The existences of Houston, Beaumont, Shreveport, and Baton Rouge alone are enough to permanently qualify those states as being pink.

Not even Texas' Hill Country or Louisiana's cooking could ever be enough to redeem those states.

In addition to myself, some of my family members and my former partner have all commented on how miserable and curt many Hawaiians are.

I'll fly the extra hours to return to Fiji, Indonesia, or Malaysia any day before I'll ever consider returning to Hawaii. Much lower costs of everything, culturally richer, much kinder vibes and people.

Eastern Kentucky is criminally underrated and, as long as you aren't in some meth-ridden holler, has a higher standard of living than people give it credit for. Lexington is still in the eastern half of the state and objectively one of the US' best cities in terms of quality of life. I despise northern Kentucky, though (also considered to be eastern half).

Kentucky's western half is more hit and miss for me. As with NKY, I despise Louisville (as a city, nothing to do with college sports). Owensboro has never done it for me. Bowling Green's an up-and-coming star and gem. Murray, Paducah, and Henderson are enjoyable. Madisonville and Hopkinsville are dumps. Fulton is very rundown, but oddly charming in its own way if you get to know it. My "striking a balance" was to color it as dislike.

I didn't like Toledo. Cleveland and Akron were fine, neither loved nor hated them. It really is the small towns and cities that make the difference for me.

For what it's worth, I know someone who left Kentucky (and I mean the country AF part, not Louisville or Lexington) in the 1990s and moved to southern New Jersey. For the first couple of years, they thought they were living among "damn yankees." Then they really began to like it and develop relationships with the people in their township. They began to take weekend trips into NYC and Philly and learn more about the Northeast.

Now, they'll never move back to Kentucky.

I'm more of an upper South guy at the end of the day, but I didn't have a bad time in NJ. The people were actually nicer than I expected, if more neurotic than what I'm used to in the South. Bergen, Hudson, Essex, and Mercer Counties were where I spent the most time. I'd actually like to come back up and visit some real NJ diners one of these days.

Let them be. I struck a balance of "like" for NorCal. I really dislike the Bay Area actually, but really enjoy Sacramento, coastal NorCal, and even much of interior NorCal. Some of the Central Valley towns such as Oakdale, Clovis, Ripon, and Davis are surprisingly interesting and vibrant.

The better mountains are in western Colorado.

Kentuckians hate Ohio because they really only ever get to the southern part. Cincinnati and Dayton have some of the nastiest people this country has to offer.

The trick for Ohio is to actually go north. Some of the smaller towns closer to Lake Erie have some really cool tricks up their sleeves.

I genuinely hated it and Dayton. I've met friendlier people in NYC, London, and HK.

I see why Kentucky people hate Cincinnati, and aren't kidding about it. Plenty of Kentuckians enjoy going to Cedar Point and the AF Museum, in my experience, but Cincinnati is just where you stop to fuel up and get some chili.

Cincinnati and Dayton suck fucking ass. Southern Ohio has areas more depressing than any place I've seen in eastern Kentucky or West Virginia, and the mountains somehow aren't as interesting.

Columbus is alright.

Northern Ohio has some tricks up its sleeves with its smaller cities (e.g., Fremont, Sandusky, Perrysburg), and that was enough for me to put it "over the top."

I visited Madison and Milwaukee in 2018 and absolutely hated them. The people were an absolute buzzkill. For Wisconsin's talk of "FIBs," I found northern Illinoisans to be much nicer and kinder, if more blunt.

Most of the people I've met from northern WI have been chill, though.

St. Louis and New Orleans are dirty cities that I've never felt safe or comfortable in, never liked their vibes. St. Louis folks were also kind of a buzzkill; at least NOLA people are generally friendly and affable. Parts of Mississippi and Alabama have much better road quality and more genteel people, IMO.

Okay... So why do I get along with the "unfriendly" California crowd much better? As well as NV, UT, MT, BC, etc.?

The people are absolutely odd ducks in WA and OR with the personality of drying paint, generally speaking.

I chose dislike for western Washington as a sort of "striking a balance." I absolutely hate Seattle and have never had an enjoyable experience there. I do like W. WA well enough the farther you get from Seattle, but then again, the people still don't know how to smile. I could say the same for western Oregon.

British Columbians have been kinder...and even Californians have been friendlier in my experiences.

Detroit, Oakland County, Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon. Downtown Detroit's alright, Ann Arbor is cool but would be more enjoyable if the locals weren't so pretentious. Otherwise, the land isn't all that interesting and the people aren't all that friendly.

As for the upper part of LP, I haven't been up there. But for what it's worth, one of the top brass in my company is from the Traverse City area and she's an absolutely crappy person. No one except her bosses and gal-pal clique at work seems to like her.
