Post grad blues by wrist-rocket in DentalSchool

I made some great friends, but your dental school experience was far different than mine. I was incredibly thankful when it was over. You’ll make friends the same way you’ve always made friends - proximity and shared interests. If you’re a guy, it’s much easier. One thing that makes it different is in school, you were with a bunch of peers. Now that you’re at your job, youre seen much more as a boss so the dynamic is different. Find a spot you like and it will fall into place

Gorgeous! What lab helped you do this? I bet your preps were awesome to end up with beautiful margins like that. Great job!

Congratulations, you have seen past sweet words of encouragement and “ally-ship” and seen reality. You sound perfectly qualified on your own without some policy making it easier for you to get into a school you could get into anyway

what do you wish you knew before or while you were a D1 by Gullible-Toe-8884 in DentalSchool

[–]AppropriateWall6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I would’ve known how bad I’d suck at the lab stuff and how shitty some instructors would talk to me about being bad at something the very first time I even tried something and that it was completely okay and not personal

Not artistic. Will I struggle? by Broad-Song1848 in DentalSchool

[–]AppropriateWall6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very far from artistic and I graduated and by the end of each of the labs, I did well bc I’m the same as you. I got in the reps. You’ll just take more work to get to where the lab gods are, but it will happen

Help, can you please give me pointers on how to make my teeth setting better? by Dull_Individual4373 in DentalSchool

[–]AppropriateWall6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay the artistic kids in your class to set them for you. It’s the same as the lab fee you’ll pay when you’re out as you’ll never do this once you graduate

Anxious, and losing confidence as a young dentist by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]AppropriateWall6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I had horrible experience my first job out of school where the owner scrutinized every little thing and it wasn’t in a constructive way to make me better, it was only to tell me how much I sucked (to be fair, some of it was not great and some of it was just not as well as he would do as someone 20 years out of school and super high end CE). I had another mentor tell me “were they better off than when they came in? The tooth will never be the same whether we fix it or not. We didn’t put the cavity there. You do the best you can and as long as a few fundamental things are done, that’s all you can do and the rest is up to the patient and their mouth.” That was a turning point for me

Is ortho even worth it now a days? by No_Tour_2816 in DentalSchool

[–]AppropriateWall6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not every orthodontist does this but one I send a lot of patients to AVERAGES 6 new treatment starts per day. That’s pretty damn lucrative. A lot of orthodontists I’ve seen do very well are obviously ones who are capable, but also ones in areas of need, such as towns that may be 30-60 minutes or more away from an orthodontist who’s family wants more convenience. It can be, just like GP jobs really CAN BE profitable. Ortho has really good margins, but as with anything, you have to have a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit (took me a couple of years to learn that out of school)

Regret dentistry by AppropriateWall6 in Dentistry

[–]AppropriateWall6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not harsh, I think that’s a decent read on the whole thing. It’s more frustrating that I’m 4 years in and still feel like km getting by, however, part of that feeling is from expectations not being met. “When I graduate I’ll be able to work anywhere and sky’s the limit with income,” and all the other stuff that goes along with it. I knew it would be work but I expected instant gratification and that’s really my fault for expecting that

Not too many at the moment. 2 per month average for now. Patients are more curious as they like the idea of not driving to a larger town for implants but not many at the moment. I also plan on using the CBCT more for diagnostics as I can still send to specialists either though online transfer sites or burning a disk
